ITS projects as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ITS America Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Curious about how much economic stimulus funding was devoted to ITS solutions? A recent analysis found that $600 million of ARRA funding, or roughly 2-3 percent of the total transportation funding, went to traffic operations projects and ITS technologies. Forty-one states and Washington D.C. made use of the funds, which were allocated to 509 projects. Traffic signalization was the top investment category, garnering $204 million for projects in 36 states. Close behind was ITS field devices such as ramp meters, dynamic message signs, cameras and sensors, which received $192 million across 24 states. States that invested most in ITS projects were Georgia ($74 million), Pennsylvania ($69 million), California ($47 million), Maryland ($43 million), and Tennessee ($37 million).

Much of the policy debate over electric vehicles has focused on their impact on the environment and energy consumption. For instance, when the federal government gave out more than $2 billion in stimulus money for electric vehicle technology last year, it was the Energy Department that selected the 48 winning projects. But are we paying enough attention to issues that are normally in the Transportation Department's purview, like fuel efficiency and infrastructure needs? More

Contrary to popular belief, traffic in Atlanta is not always hellish. There are a good few days each year when it is merely purgatorial. In 2007 2.4 million Atlantans took to the region's roads each day. They spent a total of 135 million hours in traffic delays, burning through almost 96 million extra gallons of fuel — four times as much time and almost five times as much fuel as 20 years earlier. Between 1987 and 2007 the number of drivers during peak hours doubled, as the area's population rose from 2.6 million to 5 million.
