Smart Solution Spotlight: Taking bus transit to the MAX in Salt Lake City ITS America Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Salt Lake City's MAX Bus Rapid Transit was presented a Smart Solution Spotlight award last week by ITS America for pioneering a new model for bus transit that makes use of the latest in transportation technology and infrastructure improvements. MAX BRT operates every 15 minutes to channel passengers through 29 stops and boasts 4,200 riders each day. Using bus-only lanes, transit signal priority, and a streamlined route, MAX BRT has increased ridership by a third, reduced travel times by 15 percent, and provided passengers with an efficient bus to rail connection. "Bus rapid transit is a creative solution to common problem—moving passengers in an urban environment," said Scott Belcher, President and CEO of ITS America. "By making buses faster and more efficient, Salt Lake City offers a model of integration and environmental sustainability that will radically change the way people think about bus transit." More

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is charging ahead in his political career The Washington Post Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
There is a pause to ponder in almost every interview, a hiccup in the stream of words, a groping for just the right phrase, and then it emerges: "With Ray, what you see is what you get." He has worked for three decades in Washington, capital of spin, of parsing, of nuance, of cunning, of backstabbing intrigue, where half-truths are too common to refute and many a flat-out lie goes without rebuke. Driving the future The Economist Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Few cars are of greater significance, not only for their maker, but also for the industry itself, as General Motors' Chevrolet Volt and its European version, the Vauxhall/Opel Ampera. Indeed, GM claims it will be "revolutionary." That is why The Economist, which does not normally do road tests, was keen to take up the offer from GM to drive a pre-production Ampera on normal roads in the Thames Valley earlier this week. It's not often that innovation comes from watching television. But don't tell that to Allison Hamilton, a project director with the Oregon Department of Transportation. While watching a NOVA special on PBS about solar power, she noticed solar panels on the German Autobahn. The sight of them made her sit up, turn to her husband, and ask, "If they can do that there, why can't we do it here?" After years of delayed maintenance that left many streets in poor condition, Mayor R.T. Rybak launched "Access Minneapolis," a 10-year plan that systematically reinvests in transportation to significantly reduce the city's carbon footprint. Most plan projects are being funded with a $133 million grant from the U.S. DOT's Urban Partnership Agreement program. One involved completely redesigning and rebuilding 2.5 miles of downtown streets to move buses more efficiently, reducing emissions and enhancing safety by adding two bus-only lanes. The end of the Eurostar platform at Gare du Nord is where London meets Paris. It's the perfect spot for connoisseurs of greeting gaffes, because everyone is trying to figure out which country's rules to play by. Near-snogs end up as face-bumps, attempted handshakes turn into waves, and recipients of hugs look horrified. When the greeting is only between French people, dignified efficiency rules. Yet the English always win this platform game, because an English greeting is only appropriate if it feels thoroughly awkward. You need to mess it up to get it right.
