Hudson's Bay Company teams up with Simon Properties, RioCan to form real estate ventures worth $4.2 billion
Financial Post
Through his latest act of financial wizardry, Hudson's Bay Co. governor Richard Baker has transformed the country's oldest department store chain into one of its most nimble real estate operators. It has been a process in the making since the savvy Greenwich, Conn.-based real estate investor bought out the then-limping HBC in 2008 and proceeded to make a series of methodical chess moves to get the retailer out of its least attractive properties and pour those proceeds into more valuable properties, most notably the $2.9 billion purchase of Saks Fifth Avenue in 2013.

Sears loss narrows, but sales fall sharply
CTV News
Sears Holdings recorded its fourth straight year of falling profit and revenue in 2014, even as cost cutting and store closures helped narrow its loss for the fourth quarter. The company that runs Kmart and Sears stores in the United States, has been closing stores, selling assets and slashing inventory as it continues with efforts to turn around its U.S. business. Sears Holdings has also reduced its stake in Sears Canada, which is undergoing a similar downsizing exercise north of the border.

Target Canada owed $1.9 billion from its own property firm
In a surprise move, Target Canada is now owed $1.9 billion by a property company it created, making the insolvent chain its own biggest creditor and threatening to significantly dilute the recovery of others. Shoppers got a sneak peak of what to expect at Nordstrom's newest store. Over 1,800 hundred people attended an opening night gala before the store opens to the public. They had a chance to enjoy food, drinks and entertainment, as well as do a little bit of shopping. "It's absolutely awesome here," says one shopper. "A lot of selection. It's different for Ottawa which is nice," says another. "I think it's going to do well here." Nordstrom's first store on Canadian soil opened in Calgary six months ago. It's been a successful start for that location and the company is hoping to duplicate that success in the capital. But they know challenges await.

Smart mirror allows shoppers to compare styles
Times Colonist
The MemoryMirror device is not a mirror at all, but rather a screen projecting images captured by an overhead camera. The contraption does much more than just show your reflection. It saves each outfit you try on, allowing you to compare different styles side by side to figure out which looks best. If you're torn, you can share the images with your friends, almost like having them in the dressing room with you.
