America's favorite chocolate candies
Fox News
From Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to Baby Ruth, there's no shortage of tasty candy bars. But which ones are America's favorites? It should come as no surprise that Americans have a sweet tooth. According to SymphonyIRI Group, a Chicago market research firm, people in the United States spent more than $7 billion for individual-sized chocolate candy bars, bags and boxes in just one year. But where is the bulk of that money going? Here, we take a look at those best-selling individual-sized chocolate candies, in sizes under 3.5 ounces, that are satisfying America's sugar fix. What you'll find is that oldies are still goodies — many of the top selects have been around since before World War II.

These candy companies have a surprising new strategy
Fortune
Candy companies are jumping on the health food bandwagon. Yes, really. Mars Chocolate North America and Hershey both plan to introduce snack bars for health-conscious consumers, according to Ad Age. The two companies unveiled their new bars at the Sweets and Snacks Expo this week in Chicago. Mars and Hershey are the biggest players in the U.S. confectionary market with 25 percent market share each, Ad Age said. The new snack bars will feature fruit, nuts, dark chocolate and, allegedly, lower calories.

Healthy foods: Coming soon to a theater near you?
The Salt Lake Tribune
In the annals of sales demonstrations, the guy trying to serve warmed-up edamame pods was not having a good day. The salesman was trying to give people a taste of his Colorado company's product, EdaMovie. Unfortunately, the frozen packets of soybeans had not thawed sufficiently before being put in the microwave, and the little pods weren't warming up to their optimal temperature. Still, the concept of EdaMovie is a clever one: a packet of soybean pods, just warmed, and a small popcorn bucket to catch the husks.

Crossroads for chocolate? The uncertain future of confectionery's favorite food
Candy Industry
Less than a year ago, it seem chocolate's future teetered on the brink of extinction, a series of apocalyptic and man-made events, ranging from the Ebola epidemic to rainfall shortages, from unabated demand for chocolate in China to a lack of youngsters willing to be cocoa farmers, dooming it to shortages and luxury pricing. Well, almost midway into 2015, the mood has improved slightly. First, the Ebola epidemic, thankfully, seems to be under control. Secondly, weather conditions and harvest estimates for the Ivory Coast and Ghana, although always under revision, aren't as bleak as once thought. Nonetheless, demand for chocolate in China and Asia overall still remains strong, and keeping the younger generation on the cocoa farms poses a continuous challenge.

Michigan's growing maple syrup industry remains largely untapped
WDIV Detroit
Maple trees are all around us in Michigan, so it shouldn't be any surprise that the state's maple syrup industry is exploding. Although production and demand are at an all-time high, the industry remains largely untapped. Michigan has more than three times the amount of sugar maple trees as Vermont — the largest producer of maple syrup in the country. Michigan has only tapped 0.2 percent of its potential maple taps. The largest producer of maple syrup in the world is Québec, Canada — they have tapped 34 percent of their trees.

America loves fast food: 61 percent of our calories are from highly processed snacks
Medical Daily
Even though America's fast food chains and grocery stores have been trying to turn a new leaf to observe the fight against obesity, a new study suggests that most of us still get the majority of our calories from highly processed foods pumped with salt, sugar and fat. Up to 61 percent of the food Americans buy is highly processed, the researchers found. They also estimated that 1,000 calories a day of a person's diet come from highly processed foods.
