Delta Air Lines, the world's biggest airline, and three other U.S. carriers sought permission from regulators to boost its Asia service with flights to Tokyo's Haneda airport. Applications to the U.S. Transportation Department to gain authority for up to four daily flights were also filed by United Airlines; American Airlines; and Continental Airlines Inc. More

For months, FAA chief Randy Babbitt has been talking up the safety initiatives his agency launched after a regional airliner crashed near Buffalo, N.Y., a year ago, killing 50 people. He says he's "very pleased with the progress." But much of that progress is more illusion than reality. Air Canada hopes to 'fortify' Toronto hub with push into the U.S.

Air Canada announced a major U.S. expansion, unveiling plans to add seven routes to American cities from its hub at Toronto Pearson International. Air Canada's south-of-the border growth kicks off April 6, when it launches daily service to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif. More

Allegiant Air adds Orlando-West Virginia service

Allegiant Air LLC began nonstop service from Huntington, W.Va., to Orlando International Airport. Allegiant previously offered nonstop service to Orlando via Orlando Sanford International Airport. The flights operate four times weekly between Tri-State Airport and Orlando International Airport with service on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Flights depart Huntington at 10:35 a.m., arriving in Orlando at 12:30 p.m. Flights depart Orlando at 8 a.m., arriving in Huntington at 9:55 a.m. More

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc., a leading provider of global air cargo assets and outsourced aircraft operating services, announced that its Atlas Air, Inc. operating unit has signed an agreement with its longtime customer, Rock-It Cargo, to support the upcoming tour dates of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and globally renowned, rock band Metallica. Atlas Air raises 4Q earnings projection

Air freight company Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Inc. said its fourth-quarter profit will be higher than it previously expected due in part to stronger demand during its peak season. It said it expects fourth-quarter net income to exceed $26.5 million, or $1.10 per share. The company had previously said it expected earnings of more than $18 million, or 74 cents a share. More

Sun Country moves in on Hobbit's cruise customers

Sun Country Airlines is filling the void left by the closing of Hobbit Travel. The airline said that its new division, Sun Country Vacations, will sell cruise and other travel packages, allowing passengers to book airfare, hotel or cruise ship and rental cars under one umbrella. More

World Airways to help Asiana add capacity to transpacific routes

World Airways, a subsidiary of Global Aviation Holdings, Inc., has signed an agreement with Asiana Airlines to operate one Boeing 747-400 aircraft on a full-time basis for air cargo service beginning Feb. 23 through the remainder of 2010. Asiana Airlines, a South Korea-based international airline, offers passenger and cargo operations to more than 20 countries and operates a fleet of eight wide-body freighters around the world.
