Are airports ready for the three-hour rule?
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Department of Transportation's much-talked about and, in many circles, highly-controversial new rule to upgrade protections for airline passengers will take hold at the end of April. The regulations cover everything from the number of days an airline may ignore a customer's complaint to how long a "chronically delayed" flight will be allowed to stay listed on an airline's regular schedule. But what most people are talking about is the part of the rule that says airlines will now face hefty fines if they keep travelers locked inside a delayed airplane for more than three hours. More

The head of the agency responsible for screening airline passengers said he might soon have to pour more money into new technology despite the recent investment in equipment - leading critics to predict consumers will be hit again with even higher security fees. The Conservative government hiked passenger security fees this month to help cover the cost of installing new full-body scanners at major airports and adding more screening staff at airports. More

The Department of Homeland Security said it would buy more than 1,200 additional devices aimed at detecting traces of explosives to use at airports to help thwart terrorism plots. The devices will cost $35.5 million and come out of money from the economic stimulus law President Barack Obama signed last year, the DHS said. The Transportation Security Administration, which screens bags and passengers at U.S. airports, already uses more than 7,000 of the devices. More

article
As Congress returns from recess they must quickly draft another temporary extension of the Federal Aviation Administration because the current one is set to expire at the end of the month. They must then make a decision on how to best move forward with a conference for a multi-year FAA reauthorization bill. The goal is to have a conference completed on the bill (HR 1586) before the July Fourth recess. Republican senators have already shown that they are opposed to naming conferees. As reported previously, numerous provisions contained in both the House and Senate versions will complicate reaching an agreement on a final bill. More
