Northwest Florida has a new commercial airport. The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, near Panama City, opened with flights operated by Southwest and Delta. It's the first international airport to be built in the U.S. in more than a decade and replaces Panama City-Bay County International Airport, which will be demolished. The St. Joe Co., one of Florida's largest real estate developers, courted Southwest by agreeing to cover the airline against any losses for three years. Spirit Airlines pledged to keep flying passengers even if its pilots follow through on a threatened strike. Though it offered few specifics, Spirit says it plans to work with other airlines to keep flying if its pilots walk off the job. Spirit spokeswoman Misty Pinson tells The Associated Press the carrier is "partnering with other air carrier providers to continue to serve our customers." Pinson did not say which airlines Spirit would work with, nor did she offer details about whether the carrier planned to fly a full or partial schedule in the event of a strike. More |
