United Airlines and Continental Airlines said they hammered out transition agreements with their pilots' unions, a critical step towards reaching a broader labor accord with pilots. Talks between the merging airlines and pilots were halted late last month due to a dispute between Chicago-based United and its pilots over lay-off protections, sources told the Tribune. More

Low-fare leisure carrier Allegiant Air announced it will begin twice weekly service Sept. 15 to Phoenix-Mesa, Ariz., and Long Beach, Calif., with introductory one-way fares starting at $29.99. "We're pleased to bring two more affordable and convenient ways for our customers to get away," said Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant's president. More

Qatar inks $500 million deal with Boeing for jets

Qatar Airways has placed a $500 million order with Boeing, taking its aircraft spending spree to $35 billion. The Doha airline exercised two options for 777-200 aircraft in the LR or long-range configuration, converting them into firm orders, said Akbar al Baker, its chief executive. More

FAA orders inspections of pylons on Boeing 767 Jets

U.S. aviation regulators ordered inspections of 138 Boeing Co. 767 aircraft pylons that attach the engines to the wings to reduce the threat of cracking. Inspections must be conducted after 8,000 flights rather than 10,000 as now required, and the examinations must be done within 400 flights, or 90 days, whichever occurs later, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. More

Glenn, an NU offensive lineman in the late 1970s, said those days are over, especially with Nebraska moving to the Big Ten Conference next year.
