Air Canada, U.S. Reach Deal on NHL, NBA Flights

Air Canada, that country's largest airline, and the U.S. reached an agreement allowing the carrier to provide charter service to professional ice hockey and basketball teams in the domestic U.S. market. The airline agreed to an "unprecedented level of monitoring and enforcement" on charter flights for sports teams traveling in the U.S. to ensure compliance with U.S. law, the U.S. Department of Transportation said in a statement. Asia Pacific Picture Brightens Says IATA

Asia-Pacific air cargo carriers recorded a slight improvement last month, boosted by massive government and central bank stimulus packages and fewer problems with consumer debt and bank balance sheets. According to The International Air Transport Association, Asia Pacific carriers, representing 44 percent of the global freight market, saw year-on-year demand improvement from -9.5 percent to -9.0 percent in August compared to July. Air India Resumes Bookings as Pilots Withdraw Protest

Air India resumed ticket bookings for all flights after 212 pilots agreed to withdraw their four-day protest against the national carrier's plan to cut incentives and flying allowances. The protest forced the loss-making airline to cancel about 250 flights, including overseas destinations such as New York, London and Singapore, Jitendra Bhargava, Air India's executive director of corporate communications, told Dow Jones Newswires. New FAA System Improves Safety in Remote, Non-Radar Regions

A new surveillance system introduced by the Federal Aviation Administration in Colorado allows air traffic controllers to track aircraft not covered by radar in remote, mountainous regions. "The new system, called Wide-Area Multilateration, lets us see aircraft we couldn't see before due to the rugged terrain," said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt. More

House Votes Short-term Extension for FAA Programs
