Continental Airlines Joins Star Alliance

Continental Airlines officially joined the Star Alliance, a move it says will give passengers more options and the airline more places to expand. The Star Alliance is the world's biggest airline grouping, with 25 members; including United, US Airways, Lufthansa and Air Canada. Continental was a member of the SkyTeam alliance, but left over a year ago when two other major carriers in the alliance — Delta and Northwest — said they would merge. More

Sanford Airport in Florida, Gets FAA's Safety Award

The Orlando Sanford International Airport, Fla., has been awarded the "Airport Safety Mark of Distinction Award" from the Federal Aviation Administration Airports Division for its work related to wildlife hazard management. The award, which recognizes an airport for the advancement of safety, was announced at the FAA's annual Airport Safety Conference recently in Charleston, S.C. More

Smaller Jets Squeeze Big and Tall Fliers

Air Freight Companies: Cleared for Takeoff

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings had a spectacular third quarter, showing a 181 percent jump in profits despite a 45 percent decline in revenue from a year ago in a recently released report. Too bad the aircraft owner and outsourcer of operating services isn't representative of most of the freight-delivery industry, whose financial results continue to be hobbled by the weak economy. Government's Next Challenge: Screening All Airline Cargo, Not Just Luggage

Allegiant Air Continues Profitability Streak

The nation's cheapest, ancillary revenue friendly airline, Allegiant Air, reported a profit of $13.8 million this past quarter, making them the nation's most profitable airline for this quarter. In a period of weak demand for air travel, Allegiant successfully boasts higher profit margins than any other carrier in the United States. More

Three of Nine Big Airlines Profit as Industry Improves in 3Q

For U.S. airlines last quarter, small was good. The three smallest of the major carriers – Alaska Air Group Inc., JetBlue Airways Corp. and AirTran Holdings Inc. – were the only ones to post profits. The biggest airlines reported the biggest losses. More

Thai Airways to Expand Air Freight in 2010

Following on from last week's stories concerning developments in the Vietnamese and Chinese air freight sectors comes the news that Thai Airways has just taken steps to increase its own air freight capabilities. The airline has signed a deal with U.S. operator, Southern Air to lease all the cargo space available on two of their new Boeing 777-200 wide-body freighters. More

Sun Country "Wing It" Program

Sun Country Airlines recently announced the launch of "Wing it" - a weekly fare sale program offering seats at a deep discount to the consumer. Destinations will vary on a weekly basis and will apply to travel one to 10 days out. The "Wing It" fares will be available for sale 8 p.m. to midnight every Tuesday and will be available for purchase on the Sun Country Web site, suncountry.com. More

Delta, Southwest to Add New Routes out of Detroit (Metro)

Detroit Metropolitan Airport says Delta and Southwest airlines are adding new routes next year, while a third carrier will resume flights in November. Delta will start nonstop service next June to Seoul, South Korea, and Hong Kong. Weekly flights from Metro to Shanghai will be increased from five to seven. USA3000 is resuming flights to Fort Myers, Fla., and Cancun, Mexico on Nov. 21, followed by Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on Nov. 29. More
