Eight years after the 9/11 attacks brought a new focus on security at airplane maintenance facilities, and six years after Congress first required action, the government still hasn't tightened its vigilance. Concerned that terrorists might use a repair station to sabotage airliners, Congress in 2003 passed a law ordering the Transportation Security Administration to come up with security requirements for repair facilities, and gave the agency eight months to do it. Ground was broken in North Charleston, S.C., on Boeing's new 787 second assembly line, which will comprise six buildings including a 610,000-square-foot final assembly building. The Homeland Security Department wants to expand speedy screening of pre-approved, low-risk air travelers arriving in the United States to most international airports in the country. For more than a year, the department has been testing this program at seven airports across the country and found that participating travelers cut their average waiting time to be screened from 10 minutes to three. It soon will be harder to avoid advertising if you fly on one major carrier. AirTran Airways is installing ads on the bottom of seat-back tray tables on all its planes. Passengers have to keep the tray tables in their upright, locked position, during the beginning and end of their flights. That means an unimpeded view of the ads, which AirTran hopes will bring in millions of dollars in new revenue at a time when much of the industry has been reeling amid the economic slowdown. The FAA this week published a final rule prohibiting takeoffs with "polished frost," which it defines as "frost buffed to make it smooth," on the wings, stabilizers and control surfaces of aircraft operated under fractional or charter rules. Technically speaking, Pittsburgh International Airport will lose nonstop flights to two more destinations later this month. But at the same time it won't lose nonstop service to either location. USA 3000 will drop nonstop commercial service to Cancun, Mexico, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, from Pittsburgh on Dec. 13.
