Evergreen International Airlines pilots plan a strike vote

Crew members at Evergreen International Airlines Inc., the global air-cargo company based in McMinnville, Ore., plan to vote whether to strike after negotiating for six years without a contract. Pilots and flight engineers started voting Dec. 1 on whether to approve a strike if negotiations fail, said Tawnya Burket, a spokeswoman for the Air Line Pilots Association, International. A strike would be a first at Evergreen, a subsidiary of privately held Evergreen International Aviation Inc. More

A group of 10 international airlines are calling for the scrapping of rules that bar financial support for aircraft purchases to airlines in the United States and European countries that manufacture aircraft. The alliance, including Emirates, Ryanair, and Korean Air, said they want the "home country" rule that prohibits access to so-called export credits to be eliminated More

Airport tapping grant in effort to boost discount airline use

Richmond International Airport in Virginia is betting $600,000 to persuade more people — especially business travelers — to fly its discount airlines. And if it loses, Richmond will lose, too, airport and business officials said. Working with the $600,000 grant from the Capital Region Airport Commission, the Greater Richmond Chamber is launching the "Save Low Fares Richmond" promotional campaign to ensure that competitive airfares remain a part of the airport's future. Hawaiian Air may add another Asian route next year

Hawaiian Airlines, which began its first flights to Japan recently, may add another Asian destination next year, possibly in the same country, Chief Executive Officer Mark Dunkerley said in an interview. The destination would be in addition to service the Honolulu-based carrier plans to begin Jan. 12 to Incheon, South Korea, Dunkerley said. Hawaiian's options for next year also include adding flights to South Korea, he said. More

American to negotiate with Transportation Workers Union

American Airlines and its 12,800-member Transport Workers Union will reopen contract negotiations with a federal mediator Dec. 14 through Dec. 17 in Hurst, Texas, officials said. The negotiations with Mediator Jack Kane of the National Mediation Board will be the first bargaining sessions between the company and its unionized mechanics since the TWU rejected a proposed three-year contract agreement Aug. 24. More

FAA previews SMS requirements

The FAA has begun to outline a template for the future of safety management system requirements, but that template comes as the Nov. 18 international deadline for SMS was missed. The International Civil Aviation Organization had set a Nov. 18 deadline for non-commercial operators and certain aviation organizations to have an SMS program in place. ICAO previously set a Jan. 1, 2009, deadline for member states to adopt SMS requirements for commercial operators. More
