2011 National You Be The Chemist Challenge Champion crowned

Andrew Lingenfelter, an eighth-grader from Seneca Valley Middle School in Evans City, Penn., was crowned champion of the Chemical Educational Foundation’s (CEF’s) National You Be The Chemist Challenge in an exciting competition June 20 in Philadelphia.

The event, held at the National Constitution Center, brought together 19 bright, young minds representing states from across the country. The participants battled through seven rounds of questioning about important chemistry concepts, procedures and historical discoveries before Andrew won the title of national champion in the championship round. Shivani Angappan of Bedford, Mass.; Haripriya Hehta of Des Plaines, Ill.; and Namita Nabar of Brea, Calif., placed second, third, and fourth, respectively.

Each of the participants received a variety of fun You Be The Chemist Challenge memorabilia including T-shirts, backpacks, water bottles, CHEM3000 chemistry sets and gift cards to the Discovery Channel Store. Additionally, the top four placing participants received scholarships for future educational use.
