Obama signs historic $938 billion health care overhaul
The Associated Press via the Boston Globe    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A beaming President Barack Obama signed a historic $938 billion health care overhaul that guarantees coverage for 32 million uninsured Americans and will touch nearly every citizen's life, presiding over the biggest shift in U.S. domestic policy since the 1960s and capping a divisive, yearlong debate that could define the November elections. Celebrating "a new season in America" — the signature accomplishment of his White House so far and one denied to a line of presidents before him — Obama made the massive bill law with an East Room signing ceremony. He was joined by jubilant House and Senate Democrats as well as lesser-known people whose health care struggles have touched the president. More

Rotarix rotavirus vaccine contaminated, officials say
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Federal health authorities recently recommended that doctors suspend using Rotarix, one of two vaccines licensed in the United States against rotavirus, saying the vaccine is contaminated with material from a pig virus. "There is no evidence at this time that this material poses a safety risk," Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told reporters in a conference call. Rotarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, was approved by the FDA in 2008. The contaminant material is DNA from porcine circovirus 1, a virus from pigs that is not known to cause disease in humans or animals, Hamburg said. More

Extreme obesity found in 6.4 percent of children, Kaiser study finds
BusinessWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Extreme obesity affects about 6.4 percent of children, according to a Kaiser Permanente study that suggests overweight kids are getting even heavier. More children are graduating from "obese" to "extremely obese," according to the study, the first to evaluate kids using U.S. guidelines published last year that distinguish among degrees of obesity. The report drew from the electronic medical records of 710,949 patients ages 2 to 19 years old enrolled in 2007-2008 in Kaiser health programs in Southern California. More

Measles outbreak triggered by unvaccinated child
HealthDay via MSN Health & Fitness    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What began as a family trip to Switzerland in 2008 ended up as a public health nightmare in California. The family's 7-year-old boy, who was intentionally unvaccinated against measles, was exposed to the virus while traveling in Europe. When he returned home to San Diego, he unknowingly exposed a total of 839 people, and an additional 11 unvaccinated children contracted the disease. Three of those infected were babies, too young to have yet received the measles vaccines, and one of the babies was hospitalized for three days with a 106-degree fever, according to a report to be published in the April issue of Pediatrics. Parents' depression can affect kids
The Baltimore Sun    Share    Share
on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gary McMane, 50, of Fontana, Md., is convinced that his own depression has taken a toll on the three children he adores. "They're all good kids, and good in school, but I know it's had a terrible effect on them." His 22-year-old daughter hangs on to her high school boyfriend as a security blanket, he says, and his 17-year-old son seems seriously depressed. Further, he adds, the 13-year-old boy is overly sensitive, feeling compelled to "rescue" anyone who is hurt. Granted, such perceptions are filtered through McMane's own feelings of guilt and responsibility — and his kids might not agree — but he's right to worry. More

Chemical may protect MD patients' hearts
UPI    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. medical scientists say they've discovered a molecular chemical might help protect the hearts of Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients. The University of Minnesota Medical School researchers said the chemical — which they've nicknamed a "molecular Band-aid" — seeks out tiny cuts in diseased heart muscle. When injected into the bloodstream, the chemical finds microscopic cuts and protects them from harmful substances so the heart muscle cells can survive and function normally. More

Children with autistic traits remain undiagnosed
Science Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There has been a major increase in the incidence of autism over the last twenty years. While people have differing opinions as to why this is (environment, vaccines, mother's age, better diagnostic practice, more awareness etc.) there are still many children who have autistic traits that are never diagnosed clinically. Therefore, they do not receive the support they need through educational or health services. More

Children with insomnia and shorter sleep duration may have impaired modulation of heart rhythm during sleep, researchers have reported. In a study of young children, researchers showed that insomnia symptoms were consistently associated with impaired heart variability measures. They also found a significant but less consistent pattern with shortened sleep duration and decreased heart rate variability. More
