Lumber rises to 4-month high as US disputes Canada pricing
Lumber futures rose the maximum permitted by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, touching a four- month high, as the U.S. disputes the pricing of wood imported from Canada, the biggest foreign supplier. British Columbia is "under-pricing" timber from public lands and "circumventing the export measures" in a lumber agreement the two nations reached in 2006, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said in a statement dated Oct. 8. The U.S. requested talks to resolve the dispute. Lumber futures are up 30 percent in the past year.More
Bank of America ramps up small-business banking

Bank of America announced recently that it is launching a program in the Washington area to improve lending and services for small businesses. The move comes as the White House is calling on the nation's biggest banks to help shore up Main Street. The program involves hiring 1,000 bankers over the next year to specialize in developing relationships and products for mom-and-pop shops, starting in Washington, Baltimore, Dallas and Los Angeles.More
Uncertainty over taxes makes planning tricky

A lack of resolution around a host of federal tax issues is making it difficult for companies and accountants to do their year-end tax planning. "The key word here for tax planners is uncertainty," said Greg Sevier, managing partner of Peterson, Peterson & Goss. "It certainly makes planning difficult." Sevier and his peers said the uncertainty around those tax issues means they are having to delay their tax planning to later in the year.More
