Use of controls escalates in LED lighting despite lack of standards
LEDs Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Adaptive lighting control is becoming a necessity. Efficient solid-state lighting, using LED sources, is a step in the right direction for slashing energy usage, and controls that eliminate overlighting can greatly enhance savings. Lighting manufacturers and companies dedicated to sensor and control products support adaptive-control scenarios today, although the networking schemes that link products are largely proprietary. Standards-based networks would enable interoperable products from multiple vendors, but a robust, standardized, lighting-centric network is still a work in progress. More

China ready to defend its rare earth policies
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
China's Commerce Ministry said it is prepared to defend its rare earth export policies at the World Trade Organization, days after the global trade body ruled against its export restrictions on raw materials exports. A WTO panel decided that China had violated global trading rules by curbing exports of raw materials such as bauxite, coke, magnesium, manganese and zinc, which inflated prices and gave domestic Chinese firms an unfair competitive advantage. Rare earth metals were not part of the ruling, but users of the crucial group of 17 elements hope China will also scrap export limits on these commodities. More

Commentary: New light bulb battle a breeze compared with Edison's
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Environmentalists are increasing the pressure to give up incandescent lighting in favor of compact fluorescent bulbs and LEDs. The public is resisting, talk radio hosts have rebelled and congressmen have claimed that the government has no right to tell people how to light their homes and offices. This will probably be a long battle. But the transition away from incandescence will surely be quicker and easier than what occurred when the incandescent bulb first became available. For many reasons — health and aesthetics were just two — people resisted light bulbs for decades. More

Distributors have to balance many things to maintain profitability. Pressures include economic uncertainty; rising transportation costs inside and outside the firm; price erosion and leakage; inefficiencies in warehousing and distribution networks; the need for better inventory planning, management and control; and rising sourcing, supply and procurement costs. Following is a framework for finding cost control opportunities. More

There's no hard and fast definition of minimalism, but there is one common principle that's shared: focus on the essential and eliminate the nonessential.
