The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is kicking off the celebration of Energy Star's 20th anniversary by recognizing the 2012 Energy Star award winners for their outstanding leadership and commitment to protecting America's environment through superior energy efficiency. Over the past 20 years, with help from Energy Star partners, American families and businesses have saved about $230 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 1.7 billion metric tons of carbon pollution. GE Lighting Solutions has introduced its first commercial product in the Lumination brand line. It is a recessed LED troffer. The troffer is designed to compete with fluorescent fixtures and installs in common T-bar ceiling grids. It is dimmable and provides up to 26 percent savings in electricity cost relative to fluorescent alternatives. More

The drive to make buildings greener has been spearheaded by some unusual sources, including the Department of Defense, which is applying new technology to its 300,000 buildings worldwide, and Google, which is focused on transforming its offices to improve employee health and productivity. Nanotrees to cleanly harvest the sun's energy

University of California, San Diego, electrical engineers are building a forest of tiny nanowire trees in order to cleanly capture solar energy without using fossil fuels and harvest it for hydrogen fuel generation. The team said nanowires, which are made from abundant natural materials like silicon and zinc oxide, also offer a cheap way to deliver hydrogen fuel on a mass scale. More

Growth to strengthen as jobs lift consumers

The world's largest economy will strengthen through 2012 as employment gains give Americans the means to withstand rising fuel costs, according to economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Gross domestic product will climb at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the final three months of the year, up from 2 percent this quarter, according to the median forecast of 71 economists. For all of 2012, the U.S. may expand 2.2 percent, accelerating from 1.7 percent in 2011. More
