Design and construction of a "shack" to demonstrate renewable and HVAC technologies, including solar thermal heating, photovoltaic power generation, high efficiency and green insulation options and wood pellet stoves, is being developed by undergraduate students in an ASHRAE Undergraduate Senior Project Grant. Strategies Unlimited has published a new report entitled "LED replacement lamp market analysis and forecast" that projects a global LED-retrofit-lamp market that exceeds $3.7 billion by 2016. According to the report, there were 39.9 million solid-state lighting A-lamps sold globally in 2011. Strategies Unlimited analyst Katya Evstratyeva said that Japan led the way in consuming LED A-lamps with 24.7 million of the global total. The Japanese Eco-point program was in part responsible for the high market numbers, but Evstratyeva said other factors such as environmental concerns and high prices in compact-fluorescent lamps contributed as well. The energy-efficient lighting industry is growing strong, according to a survey by Precision Paragon, an energy efficient commercial lighting manufacturer. The Energy Efficient Lighting Industry survey was distributed to more than 2,900 lighting professionals in the U.S. Of those who responded to the survey, 69 percent either met or exceeded their revenue expectations in 2011, and over 80 percent predicted more opportunities for growth in 2012, both for the industry and for their individual companies.
