New 2012 Standards for General Service Fluorescent Lamps
NEMA with comments from ULT    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On July 12th of this year new DOE regulations for general service fluorescent lamps take effect. The new efficiency standards essentially outlaw the standard 4-foot T12 lamps and were also going to do the same for the 700 series T8 lamps. Note: Some high cost T12 lamps still meet the requirements.

Due to the rare earth phosphor issues in China, the major lamp companies were able to get "Exception Relief" for the 700 series T8 lamps. This exception relief will be effective for the next two years.

The attached document details the regulations BEFORE the exception relief was issued for the 700-series T8 lamps.

LED enlightenment aids efficiency options
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While small business job creation isn't as strong as we'd like, it's stronger than many people think. Since the recovery began, small and midsize companies have been producing more jobs than their larger counterparts and creating them at a faster pace than during the recovery from the 2001 recession. But because small business employment hasn't yet caught up to where it was before the recession began, the perception that small employers aren’t hiring endures. More

Lighting option an oldie but goodie
Electric Co-op Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
LEDs spend so much time in the spotlight these days that an old standby is often overlooked. But the folks at NRECA's Cooperative Research Network think induction lighting deserves a second glance. "It's a mature technology. It works," said Brian Sloboda, CRN senior program manager. CRN and its strategic partner E Source have been looking at how induction lighting stacks up against LEDs. Sloboda said each technology has its advantages. More

Carnegie Mellon reports that DC power is cheaper for LED lighting
LEDs Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The debate over AC or DC power grids will apparently continue into a third century as researchers have documented significant energy savings potential in commercial buildings when LED lighting is powered by a DC grid. Carnegie Mellon University researchers say DC power could save $24,000 a year in a 48,000-ft2 building lit by solid-state lighting. The university team published the research in the scientific journal Energy Policy. A DC grid was not identified as an advantage for fluorescent lighting, but the advantage for SSL is clear. Moreover in a building equipped with solar cells that generate DC power, the savings escalate another $5000 per year. More

China to issue rare earth special tax permit to regulate overproduction
Platts    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
China will start allocating value-added tax permits to rare earth companies in Sichuan and Inner Mongolia from May 1 in a bid to regulate overproduction of the mineral, sources told Platts recently. China accounts for about 97 percent of world output of the 17 rare earth metals crucial for the defense, electronics and renewable-energy industries and used in a range of products such as smartphoones, disk drives and wind turbines. But its reserves only account for about one-third of the world's total. More

3 tubular skylights for daylighting and LEED credits
Green Buildings    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A tubular skylight provides natural light to indoor spaces where it might not otherwise be possible to do so. These tubular skylights, or light pipes, allow daylight to be transferred from the roof to occupied space below, even when there is a considerable distance involved – such as through an attic. More

Understanding venture capital's role in lighting
Architectural Lighting via Edison Report    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lighting manufacturer Soraa is on the verge of shipping the first of its potentially revolutionary line of LED MR16 lamps. Based on a technology that grows an LED's photon-producing gallium nitride crystal on gallium nitride itself, allowing the LED to run on more current and generate 10 times more light, the lamps will be the first to offer quality performance equivalent to that of a 50W halogen MR16, according to the company. And without $100 million in venture capital funding, it's unlikely that the company, or its ability to pursue this line of research, ever would have existed. More
