Lighting Science Group and Dixon Technologies India touted an LED light bulb equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent that they say will hit store shelves with a price below $15. The omnidirectional LED bulb, in the traditional A19 shape of household incandescent light bulbs, will become available in India by the end of the year and worldwide, including the U.S., in early 2012. It's the first in an expected series of products, including streetlights and industrial fixtures, that Lighting Science and Dixon plan to jointly manufacture and distribute. Six months ago, China's exports of rare earth elements breached the dizzying price of $100,000 per ton barrier, a nearly 900 percent increase in prices from a year before, representing a remarkable $50 per pound for unprocessed ore. This has Chinese authorities alarmed because many illegal mining operations use ammonium sulfate and oxalate to extract rare earth metals, contaminating local water supplies. Cree, a maker of LED products, said that it would acquire Ruud Lighting for $583 million to expand in LED outdoor lighting. Ruud Lighting will continue to be based in Racine, Wis., and will operate as a Cree subsidiary, the company said. Under the terms of the deal, Cree is paying $372 million in cash and $211 million in stock for Ruud. But Cree estimated that expected future tax benefits stemming from the transaction would reduce the cost of the acquisition to $525 million.
