Cooler LED light bulb could last 37 years
NTD-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The CSYS lamp sets a new standard in environmental performance, according its developer Jake Dyson. The secret is heat pipe technology, borrowed from the electronics industry, where tiny copper pipes with a vacuum inside are used to remove heat from the computer components. Dyson says LEDs are semiconductors, and if they are treated in the same way as semiconductors in electronic applications, they will last a lot longer than bulbs that are commercially available at the moment. Bridging the small commercial efficiency gap: SCL Elements raises $2.15 million
Greentech Enterprise    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Let's face it — almost all the "smart building" technology being installed today is going into big buildings. In part, that's due to the complicated mix of different technologies that makes them a hard sell for all but the most dedicated and deep-pocketed building owners. That's left small and midsize commercial buildings as an untapped market. But startup SCL Elements is promising its CAN2GO system will change that. More

A turbine to tap the high winds at 1,300 feet
Popular Mechanics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As a kite boarder, Corwin Hardham experienced firsthand the power of wind. As an engineer, he wanted to harness that energy with the ease and flexibility of the sport. Makani Power, which Hardham co-founded, now leads a small pack of startups eagerly attempting to tap into an unexploited resource — the strong, consistent winds blowing above 1,300 feet. To do so, Hardham did away with 90 percent of the mass of a conventional turbine and instead mounted Makani's technology on a glorified string. But rather than resembling a kite, the sleek, 20-kilowatt Wing 7 prototype is equal parts airplane, helicopter and robot. More

Scientific American    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recent exploration of rare volcanic rocks in the rugged, dangerous desert of southern Afghanistan has identified world-class concentrations of rare earth elements, the prized group of raw materials that are essential in the manufacture of many modern technologies. So far, geologists say, they have mapped 1 million metric tons of these critical elements, which include lanthanum, cerium and neodymium. More

10 clues to opportunity
strategy + business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Managers and entrepreneurs walk past lucrative opportunities all the time, and later kick themselves when someone else exploits the strategy they overlooked. Why does this happen? It's often because of the natural human tendency of confirmation bias: People tend to notice data that confirms their existing attitudes and beliefs, and ignore or discredit information that challenges them. Although it is difficult to overcome confirmation bias, it is not impossible. More

Delay tactics: When to stall and how to recognize when someone is giving you the runaround
Keld Jensen: Transparency in Negiotiation    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Stalling, simply enough, refers to delaying certain decisions and other details within the realm of negotiation. Typically, a negotiator will employ this tactic in order to inspire uneasiness and doubt in an opponent. However, stalling can also be used more ethically in order to buy time for additional research or internal discussion. It is also a great option if you are worried about your emotions bleeding into your work and you simply need time to cool off. Of course, like any business maneuver, delay tactics are not without risk. More

Can you revive dead-weight employees?

FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Your company is probably carrying dead weight, though it might not be where you think. Managers often harbor the fear that employees with one foot out the door will lose motivation to work hard at their current jobs, and that's a real problem: more and more people want to leave their jobs today than in years past. But employees on the way out aren't actually as big of a threat to a healthy corporate culture as the growing ranks of disillusioned and frustrated workers who simply stay put. More
