State associations offering NAPT PDS courses @ annual conferences

South Carolina (SCAPT), Missouri (MAPT), and Maine (MAPT) provide variety of educational sessions for members

SCAPT is offering three NAPT Professional Development Series (PDS) courses at their conference in July 2015:

    Regulating Uber and refilling growlers: What the hundreds of new state laws that take effect do
    The Washington Post
    From the mundane to the substantial, at least 700 new state laws go into effect July 1, a common effective date for legislation. Guns rights advocates, ride-sharing companies and craft beer fans were among those to benefit from the new laws, with states easing regulations governing each.

    Missouri takes districts for a bumpy ride when it comes to bus funds

    Missouri has slowed its roll in recent years when it comes to funding school transportation costs. Less money is available for all districts — and school buses can take a beating, especially in rural areas where gravel roads and potholes are common. But problems aren't limited to rural districts. In 2004, St. Louis Public Schools received $12.2 million from the state. This year the district received $4.3 million, said Patrick Wallace, district spokesman. The district contracts its bus service out to First Student.

    Report: Federal education funding plummeting
    U.S. News & World Report
    Over the last five years, Congress has cut federal funding for K-12 education by nearly 20 percent, about five times more than overall spending cuts, according to a new report. In an analysis of the federal budget, the bipartisan advocacy organization First Focus found federal spending that affects children — including funding aimed at preventing child abuse and neglect, for housing allocated to children, and for programs targeted toward homeless youths, as well as education funding — has dropped 9.4 percent since 2011, when federal stimulus funds ran out. Overall federal spending dropped 4 percent in the same time.

    MassDOT begins Youth Pass program aimed at young people

    The Massachusetts Department of Transportation launched a yearlong pilot program to help more young people get access to public transportation for getting to work, school and other activities. The pilot program MBTA Youth Pass will provide monthly passes to those aged 12 to 21 for $26 a month, and make transportation available to 1,500 people from Boston, Somerville, Chelsea and Malden, MassDOT said in a statement. The partnership between those cities and the MBTA offers the current Student Pass program, which is usually available only to middle- and high-school students, to a larger youth population, the transportation department said. The Student Pass allows reduced fares for eligible students.

    Transportation sector gains 17,000 jobs in June

    The transportation sector gained 17,100 jobs in June as the national unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in seven years, according to statistics released by the Department of Labor on Friday. The Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said there were 4,777,500 jobs in transportation in June, compared to 4,760,400 in May. The jump was part of a 223,000 increase in overall jobs in June that brought the nation's unemployment rate down to 5.3 percent, the BLS said.

    Education organizations to Congress: Keep vouchers out of ESEA rewrite
    Education Week
    The U.S. Senate is slated to start debating a rewrite of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. One of the big points of contention to watch? Expanding school choice. And that prospect does not make a coalition of more than 50 organizations — ranging from AASA, the School Superintendents Association to the Texas Freedom Network very happy. Those organizations sent a letter to lawmakers reiterating their opposition to vouchers and Title I portability, which would allow federal money for disadvantaged children to follow students to any school they choose.

    When educators plan Individual Educational Programs for students with learning disabilities, they use several key considerations for possible instructional and test accommodations to help students improve their individualized learning. Educators choose accommodations from areas such as pacing and timing, environment, assignments, scheduling, test adaptations, etc. One area that is not often considered as a possible accommodation is noise control.

    Analysis finds 23 percent of children are victims of cyberbullying

    Recent reports suggest that 95 percent of American teenagers use the Internet, with 85 percent of this group using social media. More than half of adolescents were also found to log in to a social media website more than once a day, with 22 percent logging in to their favorite social media portal more than 10 times each day. Because adolescents are at a stage in their development when they are vulnerable to peer pressure and have limited capacity to self-regulate, there is concern over the potential risks of social media use among this group, including the potential for cyberbullying, online harassment and privacy issues.
