A bus once used by actress Sandra Bullock as a mobile dressing room is now used by Pacific Western Transportation in teaching drivers how to avoid accidents on increasingly-busy highways. Pacific Western bought the bus from Nashville-based Hemphill Brothers, which provides transportation for celebrities, movie and TV companies, and converted it into a mobile driving simulator, safety vice-president Stephen Evans said. A Federal Transit Administration study released recently estimates the cost of bringing the nation's mass-transit systems into a state of good repair at $78 billion. In addition, a yearly average of $14 billion is required to maintain the systems. While most of the $78 billion backlog can be attributed to rail, more than 40 percent of the nation's buses are also in poor to marginal condition. More

NAPT ELECTION ANNOUNCEMENT

Three seats on the NAPT Board of Directors are open for election this year: Director — Region 1; Director — Region 5; and a Director at Large. All positions have a three-year term that begins this November and ends on the same date in 2013. Any person who wishes to be a candidate for NAPT Director must be an active individual member of the association for at least two (2) years. Anyone interested in running for office must be nominated by a minimum of two (2) active individual members of the association; candidates for regional director must be nominated by individuals whose address is in that particular region.

At Large Directors are selected by a vote of all active members. Regional directors are selected by a vote of only those active members whose mailing address is within that specific region.

KEITH HENRY NOMINATED FOR RE-ELECTION

Current Board member, Keith Henry, CDPT, Director of Transportation for the Independence (MO) Transportation Department has been nominated for re-election to the Director at Large position. Henry was nominated by Steve Kalmes, Director of Transportation for the Anchorage (AK) School District; the nomination was seconded by Denny Coughlin, President of School Bus Training Company, Rosemount, MN.

ELECTION DATES & DEADLINES

NAPT President Linda F. Bluth, Ed. D., has announced the following dates and deadlines for the 2010 NAPT Election:

ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUESTS — Any NAPT member seeking to vote by absentee ballot must send a written request for a ballot to NAPT headquarters. All requests must be received no later than the close of business on October 8, 2010.

ABSENTEE BALLOTS MAILED TO VOTERS — Official absentee ballots will be mailed to all eligible voters no later than October 12, 2010.

ABSENTEE BALLOT RETURN — All absentee ballots must be received at NAPT headquarters no later than October 25, 2010.

Election Day is Wednesday, November 3, 2010. Elections will be held in Portland, Oregon on the Trade Show floor from 10:00 – 12:00 Noon.

NAPT Has A New Website!

The National Association for Pupil Transportation is pleased to announce the launch of its re-designed website. The new homepage provides uncluttered, one-click access to a wide variety of information, including all of NAPT's communication, leadership, education, advocacy and resource projects. The new site also features enhanced registration tools for NAPT events, including the 2010 NAPT Summit, the association's 36th Annual Conference & Trade Show set for October 30 through November 4 in Portland, Ore.

"This is the most comprehensive communication system we have ever had," said NAPT President Linda F. Bluth, Ed.D. "It provides the connection we need to keep members informed and involved in the current activities of the association."

Current NAPT Members receive exclusive and unrestricted access to the entire site via the Members Only portal. Log-in is easy - go to www.naptonline.org and enter your primary email address (the address where you currently receive email from us) as your user name and the password "napt3614". You will be required change your password upon log-in so please remember to store it in a safe, easy to remember place.

To facilitate a smooth transition, the old website www.napt.org will remain in use until August 1. You will be able to log in and get information from both sources, but only naptonline.org will be updated. After that date napt.org and naptonline.org will be identical and you will be able to use either to access our new website.
