NAPT recertification reminder
NAPT
Exciting news for those NAPT Certified members that earned the Director, Supervisor and Specialist certifications prior to 2011; your recertification deadline has been extended to December 31, 2015. Click here for the Recertification Packet.

In order to recertify, you must maintain a continuous annual NAPT membership as well as achieve a minimum number of points as follows:
  • Specialists must accumulate 10 points in the last 3 years
  • Supervisors must accumulate 20 points in the last 3 years
  • Directors must accumulate 30 points in the last 3 years
The points must be accrued and submitted along with recertification form and a payment of $25.

Members with certification dates in 2012 through today are required to submit recertification requirements every three years following certification. For example, a 2012 certification date means a 2015 recertification date. If you're wondering when you're due for recertification, or have any questions regarding NAPT's Professional Development Series and Certification programs, please contact our Education Specialist, Josh Bresett, at josh.bresett@napt.org or 800.989.NAPT (6278).

Attorney General's office rules town can't require seat belts in school buses
The Patriot Ledger
The Attorney General's office has ruled invalid a town meeting vote requiring all school buses to have a three-point seat belt for each child. Recently, the school committee briefly discussed a letter received from the attorney general's municipal law unit. The letter informs the town that the town meeting action has been overturned because it exceeds the town's authority.

Spending bill would fund preschool grants, but not Race to the Top
Education Week
Congress unveiled its long-awaited spending bill, which would fund most of the government, including the U.S. Department of Education and federally funded education programs, through September 2015. The measure, if adopted by both chambers and signed by President Barack Obama, would avert a government shutdown that could take place Dec. 11, when the current stopgap funding bill is set to expire.

Magnet schools lead the list of top US public schools

Despite plenty of criticism in recent years, public schools across the U.S. have proven their mettle. Recently, school data site Niche listed the 100 best public high schools from more than 100,000 schools in America. Survey criteria included areas like standard of academics, student culture, teachers, cosmopolitan atmosphere and diversity, along with school resources and facilities. The Niche data came from more than 27 million reviews from 300,000 students and parents.

Westport, Conn., receives second exemption for after school bus program

The Federal Transit Administration has approved Westport's a second exemption extension to allow Norwalk Transit District buses to continue providing after school program transportation to Westport, Conn., students for another six months. "I am extremely grateful that the FTA took the time to listen to the appeal and carefully review the submission," First Selectman Jim Marpe said in a statement. "It found that we had indeed made a good faith effort to resolve the issue and further agreed with the conclusion that it was not possible to do so in a short time frame."

Why kids won't quit technology

Smartphones, iPads, TVs, computers, videogames. Technology is omnipresent, especially for young students. They just can't get enough; one 2013 study found that college students check their digital devices for non-class purposes 11 times per day on average, and 80 percent of them admitted that the technology was distracting them from class. This has some educators and scientists concerned: Are students distracted because their brains are hard-wired for it after a lifetime of screens? Is there a cultural or behavioral element to the fixation that has infiltrated the classroom?

JCPS continues work on reducing ride time on buses, improving student assignment process

The average amount of time an elementary-aged student spends riding a school bus in Jefferson County is at the lowest it has been in recent years, according to a new report that will be shared with the school board. Elementary students in Jefferson County Public Schools are spending an average of 26.3 minutes on a school bus daily this year, down from 27.3 minutes last year and 29.3 minutes in 2012-2013. Meanwhile, middle and high school students are spending slightly more time on buses — 30.4 minutes this year, compared to 30.1 minutes last year and 30.2 minutes two years ago.

Two years after Sandy Hook: Mental health funding still lags

School shootings and high-profile stories of mental illness often bring about calls for change from government officials, but this year Congress did not pass mental health care reforms and states slowed in their response to the issue, shows a study by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The State Mental Health Legislation report for 2014 comes days before the second anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, when Adam Lanza — who had untreated mental illness – killed 20 children, six educators, and his mother, before killing himself. The massacre, another in a string of school shootings in recent years, again raised questions about gun control and early intervention for people with mental health issues.

Military-style technology finds way into school district safety measures

With a rapid-response team and regular lockdown drills, the school district here, like many across the country, has long been steeling itself for the nightmare scenario of a school shooting. But over the past two years, a new high-tech approach has been tested at one of the schools here — officials will not say which one — to see whether it is possible to react more effectively. Engineers from a company called Shooter Detection Systems have installed infrared sensors and microphones that can pick up the sound of gunfire and immediately notify school and law enforcement officials where and when it has occurred.
