NEWS FROM NARFE

Send letter to the editor during Public Service Recognition Week
NARFE
May 5-11 is Public Service Recognition Week, organized each year by the Public Employees Roundtable, of which NARFE is a member. NARFE members should use this week to highlight the important work they do, or did, as a federal employee. One way to do this is by sending a letter to the editor of your local newspaper(s). The letter template and Media Guide on our Legislative Action Center makes this very straightforward. We encourage you to personalize the letter to reflect your own views. Access the letter here.

Simpson, Bowles renew call for cuts in employee benefits
Federal Times
The former leaders of a White House deficit-reduction commission are again urging dramatic cuts to federal employee benefit programs, with a goal of saving tens of billions of dollars over the next decade. In a recently released report, Erskine Bowles and retired Sen. Alan Simpson, R-Wyo., recommended that federal employee pension contribution rates gradually rise so that current employees eventually pay one-quarter of the cost and new workers pay one-half.

Should you use rental properties to fund retirement?
U.S. News And World Report via Huffington Post
You may have heard that rental properties can be a great way to generate passive income. Rental properties can provide monthly cash flow, protect against inflation and usually appreciate over the long term. Some retirees swear by rental properties instead of the usual stock and bond portfolio because they don't have to stomach the volatile stock market swings. Owning rental properties can help fund your retirement, but being a landlord isn't for everyone.

Watch out for scams related to the Boston Marathon bombing
Seattle Post Intelligencer
Don't get scammed by fake fundraisers using the Boston Marathon tragedy to scam people into making bogus contributions. "It's unfortunate that in this time of national mourning, there are those who would exploit our compassion for their own personal gain — but we want to remind people to be careful with their money and make sure your donation helps those who really need the help," said Bob Ferguson, Attorney General of Washington state.
