NEWS FROM NARFE

NARFE comments on pay parity, postal issues
NARFE
Last week, as congressional primaries took place around the country, NARFE was informing Congress and making news in Washington, D.C. On June 11, NARFE sent two letters to Congress. One supported pay parity between civilian and military personnel. In his letter to House appropriators, President Beaudoin stated, "Maintaining pay parity and a reasonable system of compensation are essential to the federal government's ability to recruit and retain the best and the brightest civil servants."

The other letter opposed the abandonment of Saturday mail delivery. Writing to each representative, Beaudoin argued against both the process and substance of abandoning Saturday mail delivery. "Eliminating six-day delivery is bad policy. Though it may reduce costs in the short term, it would threaten USPS' competitive advantage and lead to a reduction in mail volume, which could ultimately cost USPS more money than it saves."

In addition, on June 12, NARFE issued a press release praising legislation to provide tax equity to civilian federal employees in combat zones.

FEDERAL UPDATE

Bill would give civilian employees in combat zones tax break
Government Executive
Civilian federal employees serving in combat zones would receive the same tax credit available to military personnel who work alongside them, under a new bipartisan bill. The Combat Zone Tax Parity Act (H.R. 4621) aims to address a shortage of civilian workers staffing dangerous regions by extending a federal income tax break to those employees.

More than 60,000 federal jobs lost: Which states were hit the hardest?
Federal Times
Over the last three years — from December 2010 to December 2013 — the federal government has lost more than 61,400 jobs as sequestration, congressional budget cuts and hiring freezes took their toll on the federal workforce. Some federal employees left on waves of buyouts or early retirement offerings as well. But the job losses did not hit every state equally.

Six of the most amazing national park drives in the US
By Dave G. Houser
One of the best things the federal government has accomplished over the last 100 years or so has been establishing and reasonably maintaining America's network of 59 national parks. Many millions of people visit the parks annually, drawn by reasonable entrance fees, spectacular scenery and myriad recreational opportunities. For some — those who can't or won't get out and hike, bike or paddle — sightseeing is the next best option. With some parks being better than others for taking in the sights from the windows of a car or RV, here are six parks that offer the best drive trip experience.
