Strong remodeling spending to slow pace heading into 2015

Growth in home improvement activity is expected to peak during the second half of 2014 and then begin to ease heading into next year, according to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity released today by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. Revised estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the home improvement market grew 5.6 percent in 2013. For 2014, the LIRA projects annual gains in home improvement spending of 9.9 percent with annual growth slowing to 7.0 percent in the first quarter of 2015.

Have you responded to NARI's Call to Action on Silica?

OSHA's Occupational Exposure to Crystalline Silica rule is deemed a major rule that will have a significant impact on the economy. According to comments submitted by OSHA's small business review panel, the rule would impact approximately 900,000 small-business owners, cost between $3 billion and $4 billion, nationally, in lost personal income and would eliminate between 60,000 and 130,000 jobs. Many of these jobs would be in the construction, manufacturing and retail trade.

For a 10-employee residential remodeling firm, the cost of the proposed rule would be approximately $35,000 or about $3,500 per employee. Costs vary by industry and firm size.

Although NARI is supportive of measures to insure the safety and welfare of our members, their employees and clients, this rule is far more restrictive than required.

On August 18, NARI will be part of a coalition (the Construction Industry Safety Coalition), which will be submitting final comments to OSHA on the proposed silica rule. After this August 18 deadline, OSHA will be working to finalize the regulation. NARI needs you to write your congressional leaders, asking them to reach out to OSHA in opposition of this rule.

It is essential that as many NARI members as possible weigh in with their elected officials NOW before the rule is complete. As currently proposed, this Silica rule has the potential to be more far reaching, and more costly, than the residential lead paint rule. If you have not yet taken action, follow this link to do so. EPA certification renewal date coming up in 2015

NARI wants members to start thinking about renewing the Environmental Protection Agency lead-certified renovator certificate to work on pre-1978 homes. For those who received the certification in the first year of the Lead Renovation, Repair & Painting program, 2015 is the renewal year of that five-year certification. In order to get renewed, remodelers will have to take a refresher course. Currently, that includes hands-on training, although the EPA is looking into removing that requirement.

If you are working in one of the following states — Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington or Wisconsin — you will need to check with your state-specific programs, using the hyperlinks included.

If you are a certified lead renovator — either through EPA or the state — don’t forget to send NARI a copy of your certificate to be listed as a certified lead renovator on the NARI website. You can e-mail it to info@nari.org or fax it to (847) 298-9225.

Save the date for upcoming certification prep programs
National Association of the Remodeling Industry
As we approach the end of summer, it’s time to start planning for NARI’s fall certification prep course line-up. These courses will prepare you to take the certification exam of your choice for the Dec. 12/13 test dates.

Sept. 8: This 12-week prep course for the Certified Remodeler (CR), Certified Remodeler Associate (CRA) and Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS) will cover building codes and dealing with code officials, jobsite evaluation and looking for hidden defects or unknown conditions, business operations to create a successful business and more. This program takes place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Central time. Click here for a prep program application.

Sept. 11: The 12-week Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler (CKBR) prep course will cover key financial indicators, various marketing tools to promote kitchen/bath-specific projects, jobsite evaluations, the roles of various trades and more. Sept. 17: The 12-week High-Performance Remodeling prep course addresses the concepts of Green Remodeling; building science, indoor air quality, renewable energy, deconstruction, energy conservation, and green process associated with building trades. This course fulfills the green education requirement to take the Green Certified Professional Exam.

Oct. 7: This eight-week Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC) prep course addresses project management techniques to help complete your project on time and on budget, the fundamentals of interpersonal communications with client and trade contractors, how to communicate with code officials and more. Oct. 8: The eight-week Certified Remodeling Project Manager (CRPM) prep course addresses project cost management, communication, project planning, quality assurance, record keeping, and risk management.
