Aging population faces housing shortage
MarketWatch
By 2030, the number of U.S. adults age 50 and older will grow to 132 million — up 70 percent compared with 2000, according to a report released by Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies and AARP Foundation. The rise can be attributed to the massive baby boomer generation climbing in age, as well as greater longevity among older Americans.

What is more interesting here is that even though 78 percent of homeowners have said that improving the look and feel of their homes is a key criterion for renovation, they want eco-friendly means to get there. US construction spending up 1.8 percent in July

U.S. construction spending staged a strong rebound in July, rising by the largest amount in more than two years. All major categories of construction showed gains in an encouraging sign that spending on building projects will help boost the economy in the second half of this year. Construction spending rose 1.8 percent in July, the biggest one-month gain since May 2012, the Commerce Department reported.

Foreclosures drop sharply in July as housing market recovers

Foreclosures plummeted in July, a positive sign for the housing market and broader economic recovery, a new report showed Wednesday. In the past year, the foreclosure rate dropped 21.2 percent, falling to 45,000 last month, the 18th straight month of at least 20 percent year-over-year decline, according to housing market tracking firm CoreLogic.

Tight housing market expected to let up in fall

This month, Heather and Kevin Mallett finally moved into the house they had been searching for, a two-bedroom ranch in Revere, delightfully close to the beach. It took them three years. “The things we were seeing weren’t really what we wanted,” Heather Mallett recalled. “We actually thought at one point that we weren’t going to find a house.” The shortage of homes on the market has frustrated buyers, hampered sales, and boosted prices, but real estate specialists say the tight inventories should ease in fall as more sellers list their homes.
