Major League Baseball stadiums to have mandatory metal detection security by 2015
The Associated Press via New York Daily News
Entering a big league ballpark will be a bit like going through an airport by 2015. Major League Baseball has told its 30 teams they must implement security screening for fans by then, either with hand-held metal detection or walk-through magnetometers. "This procedure, which results from MLB's continuing work with the Department of Homeland Security to standardize security practices across the game, will be in addition to bag checks that are now uniform throughout MLB," baseball spokesman Michael Teevan said.

TODAY
Over the past 10 years, Alison and Scott Bermack have traveled hundreds of miles — and spent thousands of dollars — to attend gymnastic practices, workouts and tournaments with their son Zachary, now 16. "It averages around $300 a month year-round for training, and that's not including airfare, hotel rooms and food, uniforms and event fees," said Alison, a 44-year-old freelance writer with two other children.

Doing the math on Cleveland's sports stadium tax
Plain Dealer
Don't like the sin tax, but you do like to go to pro sporting events in Cleveland? How about paying an extra $3 for your next Indians ticket instead? Or would you consider $7 more for a Browns ticket? This tax surcharge idea is not on the table as the Indians, Cavs and Gateway have come forward with a $135 million wish/need list for repairs and upgrades to the Gateway complex, following an earlier deal between the city and the Browns for the football stadium improvements. The leases require the public, not the teams, to pay for the upkeep of the facilities.

Don't depend on ticket sales for a successful event
NASC
The first weekend of NFL playoffs saw down-to-the-wire, thrilling games in three of the four contests. It also saw something unusual — a scramble to sell out the first-round playoff games. In Indianapolis, Cincinnati and, of all places, Green Bay, clubs scrambled, pleaded and cajoled their fan bases to buy tickets to assure sellouts and thus avoid the NFL mandated media market blackouts. To no one's surprise, enough corporate buyers turned out at the last minute to assure the games would be shown in the home teams' market.

Ohio high school football field receives New Orleans Saints' old turf
MaxPreps
If the Taylor football team of North Bend, Ohio, needs inspiration this coming fall, the players will just need to look down. That's because next season Taylor will play on the turf from the Superdome in New Orleans — the very same turf that hosted countless NFL superstars. The turf is said to be worth close to a million dollars. But because it is used — the Superdome replaces its turf each year — the school was able to purchase it for about $146,000.

Title game likely to stay in center of B1G
ESPN
As the Big Ten prepares to officially welcome new members Rutgers and Maryland on July 1, the league is mobilizing to increase its brand in the valuable Northeast corridor. The Big Ten will now regularly play games in Piscataway, N.J., and College Park, Md., and will likely be a bigger presence at neutral-site venues like MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and FedEx Field in Maryland. But the Big Ten's signature football event, the championship game, likely isn't leaving the heart of the league.
