Partnerships pay off for Louisville, Ky., NCAA

When Bellarmine University and the Louisville Sports Commission were selected to be the hosts for the 2012 NCAA Division II Spring Nation Championship Festival, it signaled a growing partnership between the city and the NCAA. And, you could say they had a trial run on that partnership with the 2010 Fall National Championship Festival. After Bellarmine, the Sports Commission and the city of Louisville successfully hosted the Division II Festival in 2010 for fall sports, the NCAA encouraged the Louisville Sports Commission to once again place a bid on the spring event.

Organizers cancel 2013 Philadelphia International Cycling Championship

For the first time since 1985, there will not be a pro cycling race in Philadelphia the first weekend in June. The startling revelation came recently from the organizer who mapped the course behind the Philadelphia International Championship. Police sergeant sues Extreme K Mud Run organizers over injury

Wendy Davis, Poulsbo, Wash., police sergeant and former deputy chief, filed a civil suit Dec. 19 with two other women, Jaclyn Brant and Germaine Szewezyk, claiming the organizers of the Extreme K Mud Run were "grossly negligent" in designing the course. The three women each "suffered [severe] displaced left ankle and foot fractures" that required surgery. They are claiming they suffered physical and mental pain, disability, discomfort and anguish, loss of earnings and impairment of future earning capacity that will continue for an indefinite period of time. Indoor sports complex could mean millions for the Grand Strand, SC

Sports tourism is big business for the Grand Strand, S.C. A new study released by the National Association of Sports Commissions shows a new indoor sports complex could raise Myrtle Beach's profile in the sport's world. City leaders recently discussed plans to find the money to fund the new facilities. The new 90,000 sq. ft. facility would house 10 wooden courts, seating for 1,000, and would cost $10 million to build. Despite the hefty price tag, research from the NASC study shows it could mean big business for the Grand Strand. More

A major regional youth soccer tournament will be coming to the Appleton and De Pere area in 2015. The US Youth Soccer Region II Championship Committee announced that the 2015 Midwest Region Championships will be hosted in the Fox Cities. The Appleton Soccer Club and De Pere Select Soccer Club will partner to host the tournament June 19-24, 2015. The region previously hosted the tournament in 2006 and 2011. More

Tuscaloosa officials say recreation expansion is beneficial

In Alabama, Tuscaloosa County park and tourism officials are pushing a five-year, $15.3 million plan to improve park and recreation facilities across the county. The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority and the Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports Commission say the investment will be worthwhile, and that's why they have teamed up to request money from the Tuscaloosa City Council and Tuscaloosa County Commission. The overall goal is to create upscale and attractive locations that will assist the tourism and sports commission in luring tournaments and other sporting events. More
