Record number of event owners registered
for 2015 NASC Symposium

Nearly 100 event owner organizations are registered for the 23rd annual NASC Sports Event Symposium, the NASC announced. More than 800 sports tourism professionals are expected to attend the annual meeting of the only not-for-profit association for the industry from April 27-30, 2015 in Milwaukee.

Donors help east Hollywood youth baseball team regain field access

A cash-strapped east Hollywood youth baseball team has been guaranteed access to its neighborhood Dodgers Dreamfield after dozens of people around Los Angeles donated enough money to pay for permits to use the field and even provide a large financial cushion. The L.A. Bulldogs had been locked out of the field in Lemon Grove Recreation Center by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks after a group of Hancock Park parents bought all the premium weekday time slots for their girls' softball league, the Wilshire Girls Softball Association.

Donation policy to be used with hockey tournament

The organizer of an annual adult Charity Hockey Tournament in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, will be the first to test out the city's new donation policy. Each member of the hockey teams must collect a minimum of $100 in pledges. The profits from this year's event will be donated equally to ARCH and the fund that will establish lights at the Strathclair softball field.

Florida commissioners voice little support for increasing tourism tax

Color Run to return to Erie in 2015

The Erie Sports Commission announced The Color Run will return to Downtown Erie for the second time on Aug. 8, 2015. The run, dubbed "The Happiest 5K on the Planet," saw a sellout crowd of 10,900 participants in its first year in Erie. The stop will be part of the event series' "Shine Tour 2015."

Slam Dunk to the Beach tournament boosts Delaware economy

Delivering a welcome offseason lift to Delaware's resorts, the Slam Dunk to the Beach high school basketball tournament contributed more than $1 million to the local economy over three days in December, according to a new report commissioned by the event's organizer, the Delaware Sports Commission. Fans and players from across the country traveled to Delaware's resorts to see the showcase of elite high school basketball talent.

USA Weightlifting and the Dallas Sports Commission have partnered with the USA Weightlifting Masters Committee and the IWF Masters to bring the Masters World Cup to Dallas in August at the Hilton Anatole. The Masters World Cup will be held immediately prior to the USA Weightlifting National Championships that will also be held at the Hilton Anatole from Aug. 13-16.

Integrity Rhythmic Gymnastics to host sport's largest competition

Integrity Rhythmic Gymnastics and the Boosters of Rhythmic and Artistic Gymnastics will host the seventh annual Spring Fling Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, April 3-5. For the fifth year in a row, the USA Gymnastics sanctioned competition will be held in the Greater Columbus Convention Center's Battelle Grand, which is the largest, multi-purpose ballroom in Ohio.

Myrtle Beach Sports Center booked up, bringing area new events

Events are booked for almost every weekend between now and mid-August at the soon-to-be-opened Myrtle Beach Sports Center and many of those events will be new to the South Carolina city. Sports center General Manager John McDonald said several of the events held in the facility in the next six months have been held across Myrtle Beach before – many at city recreation centers or high schools — and are moving into the new space. Nine of the events booked so far are new to the city and only one has previously been held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, he said.

High school athletes need more help with mental health issues

While concussions and physical injuries in high school sports are commanding more attention, young athletes still aren't getting enough help with mental health issues such as depression, bullying, substance abuse, and eating disorders, experts say. New guidelines released at the sixth Youth Sports Safety Summit in Dallas, hosted by the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the Youth Sports Safety Alliance, urge coaches and parents to be more vigilant in watching for signs of mental distress.

New practice fields enhance Louisiana sports complex

Alexandria, Louisiana, officials recently showed off the first major capital project funded with the city's recreation tax — five new practice fields for baseball and softball at Johnny Downs Sports Complex. The fields give local teams more places to practice and add an extra dimension to the sports complex to help it lure tournaments, Community Services Director Daniel Williams said.

Florida county looking to boost sports tourism

A new sports venue is just one thing that could come out of a proposed study to determine how to attract fans and recreational enthusiasts to Escambia County, Florida. Pensacola Sports Association wants the county to spend up to $350,000 to hire a consultant and study the feasibility of building a new sports venue in an effort to boost sports and recreational tourism.
