Staten Island sports complex promised in 2002 still unbuilt
Staten Island Advance
It's hard to believe, but it's been just about 10 years since the administration of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg worked out a compromise deal on Bloomingdale Park. A landscaped recreational area was built on 20 acres of the 138-acre park. The remaining land would be left in its natural state. And to make up for the playing fields that would not be built in Bloomingdale Park, the city pledged to build additional playing fields at Fairview Park, adjacent to the Bricktown Centre retail complex, which was then planned for Charleston, N.Y. That was 10 years ago.

The Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix will take place in Sarasota, Fla., again this summer after all, with the Sarasota County Commission voting unanimously to provide $79,200 for the event. The commissioners, who last month had offered less than half that amount, will also provide $3,500 in so-called "in-kind services" to support the race. KRQE-TV
In a massive capital outlay spending bill, lawmakers tucked away $5.7 million in facility upgrades at sports venues big and small around New Mexico. Little leagues around New Mexico may have seen the biggest boost. Around Albuquerque alone, there was $1.2 million in spending set aside for upgrades at parks around the city. North Valley little league is getting the majority of that, a $770,000 boost. Petroglyph had several entries for backstops, fence toppers, a scoreboard and a utility vehicle totaling totaling $150,000.

Unique start marks Cadillac 5K road race in Bangor, Maine
Bangor Daily News
With noteworthy events such as the Boston Marathon and the Portland, Maine Patriots' Day 5-Miler little more than a week away, this marks a quiet time on the state's road racing schedule. But area distance runners seeking a speed workout and a one-of-a-kind start can check out the second annual Cadillac 5K. The quirk of this event is that it actually starts inside the mall at the Cadillac Mountain Sports storefront. "We opened the store in the JCPenney wing of the mall last year and just thought it would be a fun, unique idea to start the race inside the mall," said Joe Moran, Cadillac Mountain Sports' director of marketing.
