Tackling the issue of sportsmanship

We know they take their football seriously in Texas, but this is over the top. You probably have seen the video of the football game between two San Antonio-area high schools, John Jay High and Marble Falls, where a backfield referee was blindsided from behind by one John Jay player, then speared by a second as he was still down. No surprise, both players were thrown out of the game, and both are suspended from the team pending the investigation.

How likely is it, really, that your athletic kid will turn pro?
NPR
According to the NCAA, only a tiny percentage of high school athletes actually go on to play professionally. "It's extremely difficult to make the pros; we all know that," says Tom Farrey, the director of the Sports and Society Program at the Aspen Institute and author of Game On: The All-American Race to Make Champions of Our Children. Yet, in recent years, he has started to see a shift among the parents of kids playing youth sports. "The difference is that a lot of parents today see those odds and say, well, I'd better get started early with my kid."

Playing youth sports takes a lot more green than it used to
NPR
In recent years, club teams have come to dominate youth sports, many parents and coaches say, and children and teens who don't participate can be at a significant disadvantage when they try out for sports in high school. Underserved children, Darryl Hill, who played college and professional football in the 1960s, and now chairs Kids Play USA Foundation, says, are being "shut out more and more and more" from youth sports, just because of the expense.

High school athletes may be getting the message that cigarettes are bad for their health, but the same can't be said for smokeless tobacco, a new government report shows. In fact, these young athletes were almost 80 percent more likely to use smokeless tobacco products than non-athletes, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

At least for now, the stars are aligned for another I-70 World Series
The Kansas City Star
Into the last weeks of Major League Baseball's regular season now, the teams with the best records in the American and National leagues play in stadiums separated by about 240 miles of Interstate 70. Never mind that they also are worlds apart. As she weighed the possibility, Kansas City Sports Commission president Kathy Nelson thought about the magic of the 2014 postseason and the World Series between the Royals and San Francisco. She reckons this would register a notch above even that hullabaloo, fortified by the energy (and economic impact) of fans traveling back and forth on the road she views as she does State Line: a connector, not a divider.

Groups link childhood obesity to lack of PE classes in schools
Parent Herald
A coalition of health and civil rights groups filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights Enforcement, stating that physical education classes should be enforced in California public schools, as it is believed that the lack of it is the culprit why youngsters have obesity problems. Takepart.com reports that in a pursuit to meet higher standardized test scores for math and English, such schools have given less importance to physical education. This, as per the report, "is a violation of state and federal requirements."

A transgender teen used the girls' locker room. Now her community is up in arms.
The Washington Post
For two hours, approximately 150 students stood in front of Missouri's Hillsboro High School to protest a transgender teen's use of the girls' facilities. And for those same two hours, the 17-year-old transgender teen huddled inside her counselor's office — with the door locked. "I was concerned about my own safety," Lila Perry told the New York Times.

A quarter of the 7.5 million high school athletes each year suffer a sports-related injury each year.
