High School Grad Rate Falls for Second Straight Year
The Christian Science Monitor    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The national high school graduation rate has slipped in recent years, despite an array of public and private efforts to boost the percentage of students going on to college. But some districts are beating the odds, succeeding with many students who otherwise may have fallen through the cracks. The percent of students earning a standard diploma in four years shifted from 69.2 percent in 2006 to 68.8 percent in 2007, according to an analysis of the most recent data in "Diplomas Count 2010." When it Comes to Algebra 1, Timing Is Everything
The Principal Difference    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a recent post, Mel Riddile discussed the Montgomery County (MD) Public Schools' findings for success in college. Of particular interest to me was the correlation between a student's performance in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 and the likelihood of graduating from college. Based on my years of teaching and observing the performance of students in Algebra 1, I have found that depending upon the unique nature of a particular group of students, somewhere between one-third and one-half of a class are capable of benefiting from Algebra 1 prior to the ninth grade. Those who are not ready at this point in their educational careers should take a rigorous eighth-grade course to prepare them for success in the next year. With such a background, Algebra 2 in the junior year (and pre-calculus as seniors) should be well within reach. More

NASSP    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At its most basic, differentiated instruction is simply good teaching. When teachers say they don't have time to differentiate instruction, they may be right - yet while there never seems to be enough time or resources to do everything we need to do, effective educators somehow manage to do it anyway. Join with colleagues across the country to learn practical tips on how school administrators and teacher leaders can make differentiation not only doable, but a preferred practice in their schools. MSNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cooley High School, Detroit's third-largest public high school and a neighborhood institution since it opened one year before the start of the Great Depression, will close its doors this week, ending a family tradition for students like RaShanda Sherrer. "This was our home, our family, our future," said RaShanda, a junior and A student. "Everyone in my family has graduated from Cooley. I'll be the first one in two generations to not graduate from there. It's part of my history. It's not fair." More

Education Initiatives Hit Political Head Winds
Education Week    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two of the Obama administration's signature initiatives—the economic-stimulus program's Race to the Top competition and a massive expansion of federal School Improvement Grants—are running into some resistance on Capitol Hill. Key lawmakers charged with crafting a renewal of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act continue to argue that the four models offered in regulations for the $3.5 billion School Improvement Grants are inflexible, unproven, and unrealistic, particularly for rural schools. Some Educators Question If High-Tech Tools Raise Achievement
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Under enormous pressure to reform, the nation's public schools are spending millions of dollars each year on gadgets from text-messaging devices to interactive whiteboards that technology companies promise can raise student performance. Driving the boom is a surge in federal funding for such products, the industry's aggressive marketing and an idea axiomatic in the world of education reform: that to prepare students kids for the 21st century, schools must embrace the technologies that are the media of modern life. At a time when many towns in Michigan are losing people, the "Kalamazoo Promise" has drawn a flood of new families into the city and the school system. More

Arizona Immigration Law Creates Uncertain Role for Police on Campus
Education Week    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nearly two months after Arizona enacted a controversial law requiring police officers to ask about the immigration status of suspected undocumented immigrants involved in a "lawful stop, detention or arrest," educators, police agencies and advocates are beginning to sort out what the new requirements mean for the police officers who work in public schools. Meanwhile, at least one school district with a large Latino population saw a drop in enrollment right after Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, signed the measure into law on April 23. It is scheduled to go into effect July 28. More

Six Technologies That Will Shape Education
THE Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cloud computing and gaming are among the six technologies that will have a major positive impact on K-12 education in the next few years, according to researchers. But education also faces some critical challenges in that timeframe, including challenges that may require fundamental changes to the way we educate in the United States. This according to a new report released by the New Media Consortium in collaboration with the Consortium for School Networking, "The 2010 Horizon Report: K-12 Edition." More

New Paths to Diploma Possible
The Charleston Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Students at risk of dropping out could have new ways to earn a high school diploma or a GED diploma if West Virgina Board of Education members approve changes this summer. Debra Kimbler, state GED administrator, said the "very significant changes" introduce two new paths to reaching a high school diploma and one new path to a General Educational Development diploma. In all three cases, the students are expected to stay enrolled in school until they finish. More

In Bold Move, Colorado Alters Teacher Tenure Rules
The Associated Press via Yahoo! News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Colorado is changing the rules for how teachers earn and keep the sweeping job protections known as tenure, linking student performance to job security despite outcry from teacher unions that have steadfastly defended the system for decades. Many education reform advocates consider tenure to be one of the biggest obstacles to improving America's schools because it makes removing mediocre or even incompetent teachers difficult. More

Nashville, TN, Offers Options for At-Risk Students
Education Week    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
School leaders in Nashville, TN, quickly saw a pattern when they began reviewing data on students who dropped out of school there. Many were English-language learners or young parents, or were being raised by single parents, and most were working full or part time to help make ends meet. Jesse Register, the superintendent of the 76,000-student Metropolitan Nashville school district, says administrators realized they needed new and different systems in place to make sure more of those students graduated.
