NATA Raises Awareness of Youth Sports Safety Crisis at Sacramento Summit
from NATA Share
NATA teamed with 29 health care and sports organizations on Tuesday to raise awareness and combat catastrophic athletic injuries and illnesses among young athletes. The Alliance
to Address the Youth Sports Safety Crisis in America held a summit in Sacramento, Calif., and urged parents, teachers, coaches, athletic trainers and other school personnel to take a role in reversing the trends. Recent studies point to a significant increase in catastrophic injuries that result in death or permanent disability, despite efforts to prevent and treat them. In fact, there were at least 115 sports-related deaths in 33 states over the past two years. More

Concussions, Safety Big Topic of Discussion at AFCA convention
from
Orlando Sentinel
Share

The increasing scrutiny on head injuries and concussions has drawn widespread attention in the NFL and college football. Coaches are taking notice, too. Player safety and head injuries were a big
topic of discussion at the American Football Association Coaches convention this past week, particularly the way concussions are treated. Division I-A coaches were introduced to the National Association of Athletic Trainers liaison to AFCA during their annual meeting. The House Judiciary Committee plans on holding a forum in Houston on Feb. 1 to discuss the handling of brain injuries on the collegiate and high school level. Recent reporting has found that concussions can potentially have serious
long-term consequences, especially for those who suffer repeated head injuries.

according to a new study. The findings are significant because female athletes are up to eight times more likely than men to tear a band of tissue in their knees called the anterior cruciate ligament; and these injuries, which destabilize the knee, often lead to the development of osteoarthritis (OA) later in life.

Questions Raised About Hot New Sports Injury Treatment
from
The Wall Street Journal
Share

An injury treatment popular with professional athletes failed in a study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The treatment is called platelet-rich plasma injection. The doctor takes some
of the patient’s blood and uses a relatively simple technique to separate out the platelets, some of which are then re-injected at the injury site. The idea is that the platelets stimulate the repair of injured tissue.
