Funding is available to collect injury surveillance and outcomes data in the secondary school setting. The NATA
Secondary School Injury Surveillance and Outcomes System (SSISOS) will collect data using an electronic medical record integrated with a secondary school injury surveillance and clinical outcomes data system. This system will collect patient-oriented health care outcomes resulting from certified/licensed athletic trainer interventions and services. More

Seven National Committee Seats Open for Students

encouraged to apply for one of seven positions on the National Athletic Training Students' Committee. The one-year term begins in June. A qualified applicant must be a junior or sophomore on July 1 in the year of appointment or have a bachelor's degree and be enrolled in a CAATE-accredited entry-level master’s program.

Advocacy Group on Concussions Calls for Legislation in All 50 States

With the issue of brain injuries in the NFL gaining attention, an advocacy group said it would push for legislation in all 50 states aimed at reducing sports-related concussions in young
athletes. The Zackery Lystedt Brain Project also will promote greater public awareness of head injuries, and will work to advance research efforts that focus on concussions.

Conferences Criticized Over Concussion Standards

A member of the House Judiciary Committee criticized the biggest conferences in college athletics for failing to
adopt policies on handling athlete concussions that go beyond what's required by the NCAA. During a committee hearing on head injuries in college and youth football, Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., chided leagues such as the Southeastern Conference and Big 12 for not implementing tougher rules.

approximately 7.5 million high school students participating in sports, the dangers of kids getting seriously hurt and not receiving appropriate care isn't just a possibility - it's a reality - and the consequences can be deadly. Last month, Assembly members Mary Hayashi, D-Hayward and Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, with the California Athletic Trainers' Association, presented AB 1647, a California State Capital bill calling for increased safety precautions for young athletes.
