Philly Insider Tip of the Week
"Who serves the best cheese steak? It's not really who serves the best, because if you ask 100 locals you may receive 100 different answers. The key is how to order. Do you want fried onions? You say 'wit.' If you don't, you say 'wit-out.' Do you want cheese? It's Cheez-Whiz, American or provolone. Don't
embarrass yourself and ask for swiss."
– Host City representatives AJ Duffy III, MS, ATC, PT, and Joe Iezzi, MS, ATC, PES More

ATs Say Concussion Bill Has Right Intention, Wrong Focus
from
the Newark Star-Ledger
Share

While athletic trainers understand the interest in promoting the cause of concussion care and protecting young athletes, some disagree with legislation that was presented that dictates continuing education. Sen.
Richard Codey (D-Essex) introduced a bill that would require licensed athletic trainers to complete 24 hours of continuing education in an approved sports medicine curriculum as a condition of their biennial license renewal. Four of those hours would have to be devoted to programs regarding concussion and brain injuries.

New Seasonal Flu Vaccine to Contain H1N1 Strain
from
Medline Plus
Share

This year's seasonal flu vaccine in the northern hemisphere should
include protection against three strains, including the pandemic H1N1 virus, the World Health Organization recommended. The composition, announced after a four-day meeting of experts, means H1N1 swine flu vaccine still held by drugmakers in bulk form may be used for part of the seasonal flu vaccine mix for autumn/winter 2010/2011, WHO's flu expert Keiji Fukuda said.

Long-Distance Runners May Have Endurance in Their Genes
from
Medline Plus
Share

Variations in one gene are associated with athletic endurance and may make a difference in a runner's performance, a new study has found. Researchers examined 155 track and field athletes and found that 80 percent of
those who excelled in endurance events, such as marathons, had variations of the NRF2 gene, compared with 46 percent of sprinters. An analysis of 240 non-elite athletes produced similar findings.

NCAA Report: Football Concussions Leveled Off From 2004-2008
from
the Los Angeles Times
Share

A new study used by the NCAA has found that the rate of reported concussions in college football has leveled off. The Datalys Center for Sports Injury Research and Prevention, which administers the NCAA injury surveillance program, tracked injuries in football and other fall sports from 2004-05 to 2008-09. The concussion rate dropped from 3.4 per 1,000 football players in 2004 to 2.4 in 2005. The figure was no
higher than 2.8 in the three seasons that followed. The rate includes concussions reported during both games and practice.

Even the Best Skiers Bend to Knee
Injuries
from
Straight.com
Share

Watching Olympic athletes zoom down steep slopes, it's impossible not to be blown away by their speed, stamina and fearlessness. Then there's the sheer violence inflicted on their knees: the way those body parts get
thrashed over and over again, it's no wonder that knee injuries are the most common affliction among skiers and snowboarders alike, and the most dreaded. Full or partial tears can happen in the C-shaped pads of cartilage called menisci that act as shock absorbers in the knee and in one or more of the four ligaments that help stabilize the joint, such as the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament.

Athletic Trainer Earned His Saints Super Bowl Ring on
the Sidelines
from
the Gaston Gazette
Share

Scottie Patton might not have thrown a touchdown pass, recovered an onsides kick or
intercepted Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLIV, but he still feels very much a part of the New Orleans Saints first world championship. And deservedly so. Patton has been with the Saints for the past 10 seasons coordinating all medical care and injury rehabilitation as the club's head athletic trainer. When Drew Brees tweaks a hamstring or injures his knee he relies on Patton, an 18-year NFL veteran considered one of the best in his field, to help him get back between the white lines as soon as
possible.
