Devices to Curb Concussions Stir Controversy
USA Today
When the University of South Carolina opened preseason football practice, the plan was to have the Gamecocks outfitted in Guardian Caps. The padded shells, made of polyurethane fabric, are designed to fit over helmets and reduce impacts to the head. There's controversy whether the caps violate helmet certification standards. But South Carolina tried 32 of them on linemen in the spring, liked them and bought 75 more to go team-wide for practice, says athletic trainer Clint Haggard.

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
What is a concussion? As described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions also can occur from a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. Concussions can occur without loss of consciousness.

Push is On for More Athletic Trainers in Tennessee Schools
The Tennessean
Fresh off a win in the Tennessee state legislature with a new youth sports concussion law, the state athletic trainers association is embarking on a long-term effort to require all schools to have athletic trainers. The Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society is taking an incremental approach by pushing for high schools to have an athletic trainer on hand at varsity football games beginning in 2014.

At Hall of Fame Induction, Favre Thanks Harrington for Saving Career
The Clarion-Ledger
Dressed in a blue t-shirt, blue jeans and blue and white gym shoes, Brett Favre quickly noted that he was probably the most underdressed person in the room. But that didn't matter. The celebration wasn't for him, but rather for his athletic trainer back at Southern Mississippi, Larry "Doc" Harrington. Favre quickly stopped by at the Hilton in Jackson to honor Harrington on his induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

Athletic Trainers Have Key Role in Player Safety
The Gainesville Sun
Aug. 5 marked the first official day for high school football practices in Florida, albeit non-contact for the first five days. When most football players go out on the field, there will be a certified athletic trainer close by as well to make sure their health needs are taken care of, if needed. In Tennessee, there is a push to have athletic trainers required for all schools at football games by the 2014 season.

New Guidelines in Place in Utah to Help Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses
Daily Herald
July 29 was the first official day of workouts for football teams at Utah high schools. That will seem pretty early to long-time prep sports fans, especially when they look at schedules and see that the first games aren't until Aug. 23. Almost four weeks of practice before the first whistle? Unheard of in the past, but it's going to be the norm from now on as programs across the state implement new heat-acclimatization guidelines adopted by the Utah High School Activities Association.
