Football Fever: It's Catching…Literally
from ESPN Several high-profile flu cases have been reported in the world of college football as of late: from Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy to three Florida Gators players. With each passing day, it seems, new reports of flu-like symptoms hitting football teams crop up on the sports pages. According to medical experts, the flu that's hitting those athletic fields and locker rooms is in all likelihood the swine flu, the well chronicled virus technically known as H1N1. So why are all these sick people playing football on Saturdays in an environment that seems perfectly suited for further contagion, especially when the experts advise anyone with the symptoms to stay isolated from the general public until 24 hours after the fever has passed? New Way To Calculate Body's "Maximum Weight Limit"
from Science Daily Most of us are familiar with the term, Body Mass Index, or BMI, as an index to determine healthy body weight. But, calculating BMI involves a complex formula: weight in pounds is multiplied by 703, and then divided by height in inches squared. Charts or online calculators are then used to show a "healthy weight range" given an individual's height that corresponds to the "healthy range BMI." For example, a BMI chart indicates that a healthy range BMI of 19 to 24 translates to a "healthy weight range" of 120 to 150 pounds for a 5-foot, 6-inch individual. More E-mail this story

FDA Acknowledges Mistakes in Knee-Device Approval
from the U.S. News & World Report The U.S. Food and Drug Administration violated procedures last year when it approved a knee repair device even though its own scientists recommended against approval, agency officials said Thursday. The device, called Menaflex, is made by New Jersey-based ReGen Biologics and is used to help surgically repair knee damage -- specifically, damage to the meniscus.
