Injury Rehabilitation

War Injury Leads to Advances at Home
from the Los Angeles Times
A world away from the roadside bombs and combat injuries of Iraq and Afghanistan, Americans are suffering the same type of brain injury seen in troops coming home from those war-torn countries. On American roads, at workplaces and on playing fields, more than 11 million have been hurt since the fighting overseas started. The nation's military branches and veterans agency have stepped into a virtual funding void, investing heavily in research on brain injury and its aftermath. The combined surge of public attention and military largess, experts say, promises to bring civilian and military victims alike better means of diagnosing and treating brain trauma and limiting its toll. Ballplayer Steals One on Death Thanks to Athletic Trainer
from Athletic Business
When Fullerton College athlete Jared Marchbanks lost consciousness and hit the pavement face first in a campus parking lot, death was coming at him fast. But something extraordinary happened instead. Two colleagues in the right place at the right time -- both trained in resuscitation -- came to Marchbanks' aid. Later, a new state-of the art system to induce hypothermia at St. Jude Medical Center preserved the student's nervous system and brain. The college's certified athletic trainer, Lisa Nelson, calls the episode, "God watching out for Jared and I was the person God chose." More    E-mail this story

But recent studies by the Stanford School of Medicine disagree. Arthritis is a long-term disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues, causing joint pain and discomfort. While the sources of arthritis are currently unknown, studies suggest running is not only non-detrimental to one's health, but also may actually be beneficial. More    E-mail this story

Players Face Head-Injury Risk Before the N.F.L.
from The New York Times
When a recent survey commissioned by the National Football League indicated that its retirees have been diagnosed as having dementia or other memory-related diseases at rates vastly higher than the national population, it spoke to the risks of playing professional football in the 1950s through the 1990s. The study did not directly address two more immediate and societal concerns: Do today’s N.F.L. players face similar or worse long-term dangers, and to what extent might those risks reach down to the 1.2 million teenagers who play high school football every weekend?
