N.F.L. Issues New Guidelines on Concussions
from
The New York Times
Share

The National Football League on Dec. 2 announced that it would impose its most stringent rules to date
on managing concussions, requiring players who exhibit any significant sign of concussion to be removed from a game or practice and be barred from returning the same day. The league has maintained, despite widespread criticism, that it was safe to allow players to return to the field as soon as their symptoms were gone -- even in the same game in which the injury occurred. It has not been uncommon for players to return, either after passing a sideline test or by not revealing their
symptoms.

How to Prevent Stress Fractures
from
The New York Times
Share

Stress fractures are one of the more pernicious injuries in sports, afflicting the experienced and the aspiring, with no regard for competitive timing. The International Association of Athletics Federations, the world governing body for track and field, recently
described stress fractures, with a kind of grim resignation, as "the curse of athletes." But studies published in the December issue of the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise offer hope that, at least for runners, simple alterations in their stride or in the strength of their legs might reduce their risk for the most common type of stress fracture.

report from the 22-member work group, made up of education, athletics and medical professionals, recommends that the Kentucky Board of Education and the General Assembly require that "every public high school in the state" have certified athletic trainers, who receive certification from the Board of Medical Licensure.

Research found that the "Tyler Twist," a novel exercise using the Thera-Band® FlexBar® , is effective at reducing pain associated with chronic lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). In response to many requests for an exercise for golfer’s elbow, Tim Tyler, PT, ATC, invented the "reverse Tyler twist," believing it may have similar results for medial epicondylitis. A new study, using the FlexBar and emphasizing
eccentric contraction of the wrist flexors and pronators, is planned. www.thera-bandacademy.com 800-321-2135.
