Shoulder Repair Technique Borrows From Cadavers

Patients who
frequently experience shoulder dislocations can benefit from a procedure that "sculpts" a new shoulder using bone and cartilage from cadavers, new research suggests. The study, published in the December issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, finds that the procedure could be an alternative to methods that stabilize or reconstruct a shoulder joint by repairing ligaments and tissues. "In situations where there's missing bone…the soft
tissues see forces that are much higher than they can withstand and they fail," Dr. Jon Sekiya, surgeon and associate professor at the University of Michigan Health System, said in a university news release.

Larry Gardner, a
longtime UT Dallas athletic trainer who helped form the Comets' full-time athletic training program back in 2001, has announced that his 40-plus year career will come to an end Dec. 31. Gardner, 69, whose athletic training career has included positions in the National Football League, Professional Rodeo Association, Stanford University, and professional auto racing, was honored at a departmental holiday luncheon recently. He will work his last UT Dallas athletic event on Sunday, Dec. 20, when
the Comets host McMurry in a basketball doubleheader.

Playing any contact sport entails a risk of injury, and studies on elite and non-elite female soccer players have reported rates of injury similar to those in men, the most common being injuries to the knee and ankle ligament and thigh muscle strains. Horseheads Dynamo Soccer Club implemented the "11+" program in February 2009 to help protect its players and members from the problems associated with sports injuries.
