ATs Encouraged to Obtain NPI Number
from
NATA
Share

NATA strongly encourages all athletic trainers to register for their
National Provider Identifier number. Applying for an NPI number is quick, easy and free. The National Provider Identifier is the result of the mandate in the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) that the Secretary of HHS establish a standard national provider identifier. Though all healthcare providers will be eligible to receive NPI's, covered healthcare entities will be mandated to use the NPI as the sole provider identifier on all HIPAA electronic
transactions. The 10 digit number will be assigned by a CMS-funded NPI "Enumerator" through the NPPES (National Provider and Plan Enumeration System).

Female Athletes at Greater Risk for Iron Deficiency
from
Yahoo Sports
Share

Nearly every living creature requires iron to carry out life functions; humans are no exception. Humans, much like many animals, require iron to maintain a healthy
circulatory system and blood flow. Specifically, iron is used within the bloodstream to aid in the transportation of oxygen throughout the body. Iron also plays a critical role in the growth and development of cells within the body. A deficiency of iron can be incredibly dangerous for anyone, but especially so for female athletes.

Key to Avoiding Ankle Re-Injury May Be in the Hips and Knees
from
Science
Daily
Share

Nearly all active people suffer ankle sprains at some point in their lives, and a new University of Georgia study suggests that the different ways people move their
hip and knee joints may influence the risk of re-injury. In the past, sports medicine therapists prescribed strengthening and stretching exercises that targeted only ankle joints after a sprain. The study by UGA kinesiology researchers, published in the early online edition of the journal Clinical Biomechanics, suggests that movements at the knee and hip joints may play a role in ankle sprains as well.

Helmets Popping Off at Alarming Rate in College Football
from
USA Today
Share

Plenty of attention has been focused this college football season on alternate uniforms (see Maryland, Georgia, Boise State and countless others). But really attracting notice, at least from referees, are helmets that are popping off with stunning regularity. There's
been anecdotal evidence about a growing number of helmets hitting the ground the previous two seasons. As a result, the NCAA Football Rules Committee discussed the issue in February and decided to count the number of occurrences.

Sports Medicine Said to Overuse MRI's
from
The New York Times
Share

Dr. James Andrews, a widely known sports medicine orthopedist in Gulf Breeze, Fla., wanted to test his suspicion that MRI's, the scans given to almost every injured athlete or casual exerciser, might be a bit misleading. So he scanned the shoulders of 31 perfectly healthy professional baseball pitchers. The pitchers were not injured and had no pain. But the MRI's found abnormal shoulder cartilage in 90 percent of
them and abnormal rotator cuff tendons in 87 percent. "If you want an excuse to operate on a pitcher's throwing shoulder, just get an MRI," Andrews says.
