The first nationwide competition for music theater soloists, the National Music Theater Competition, has announced the opening of online applications through digital audition management sponsor, ArtsApp. Sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the National Music Theater Competition is open to performers ages 20-28 by the application deadline of March 1.

Autism-friendly Broadway shows: 2 more planned after success of 'Lion King'

Two more autism-friendly performances of Broadway musicals will be offered this spring and fall following the success last year of the first showing of a Broadway show specially altered for those diagnosed with the disorder.
The Theatre Development Fund, a nonprofit organization focused on providing access to live theater, said it plans to offer specially designed matinee showings of "Mary Poppins" on April 29 and "The Lion King" on Sept. 30.

There is much research to show that music can improve academic performance. But what about behavior? Kindergarten teacher Shelvia Ivey sees the effects every day in her classroom.
"It's fun to see the shy ones blossom and music is a way for them to do that," Ivey said. "For some of the more aggressive children who have a hard time controlling their instincts, it's a time for them to express themselves, too, and it's easier for them to control their instincts. And they're allowed to be expressive, and be unique."

Streep's voice has been much analyzed by critics for its versatile qualities, especially her facility with accents and her vocally uncanny impersonations of Margaret Thatcher and Julia Child. In the NPR interview, Streep spoke about the importance of voice in her training and subsequent career.
