National Music Theater Competition auditions underway

The first National Association of Teachers of Singing National Music Theater Competition is progressing toward the semifinal and final rounds, which will take place this summer at the NATS 52nd National Conference in Orlando, Fla.
The NMTC is the first national competition for music theater artists and is the first time NATS has created an additional national level artist competition since the formation of the NATS Artist Awards in 1955. It is unique in that it is aimed at the emerging music theater artist.

Classical music is supreme at the nation's highest court

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg recently provided Alex Ross at The New Yorker with a list of her favorite records. Not only does Justice Ginsburg have impeccable taste in opera — from Placido Domingo's classic "Otello" to the Nathan Gunn and Ian Bostridge's "Billy Budd" — but her son, James Ginsburg, has become an important force in promoting Chicago-area musicians via his record label Cedille.
Meanwhile, Justice Ginsburg has also invited one of the true giants among pianists, Leon Fleisher, to play for the Supreme Court.

As written by Ben Brantley, "Something rare and wonderful happened at the opening night of the Encores! concert production of 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' at City Center in New York. At the end of the show, when the performers took their bows, the audience remained seated.
Let me hasten to add there was no doubt that this audience had mightily enjoyed what it had just seen.
We had all beat our hands raw with clapping through a succession of showstoppers, including a tap sequence that would have made you swear the ghosts of the Nicholas Brothers had possessed its performers; an athletic series of variations on the Charleston; and a knockout rendition of 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend,' that immortal anthem to nonliquid assets."

New York City Opera is ending its first nomadic season with a small production that is big news. The company presented the first of four performances of Telemann's "Orpheus" at El Museo del Barrio, the Hispanic cultural center on Fifth Avenue in New York City that has an intimate 600-seat theater ideal for Baroque opera.

Audra McDonald has starred in stage classics and on TV, where she played a leading role on the ABC drama "Private Practice" for four seasons. But the actress might be better known for her stunning voice and for her performances in the Broadway productions of "Carousel," "Master Class" and "Ragtime," which helped her rack up three Tony Awards before the age of 30. She won a fourth Tony for her performance in "A Raisin in the Sun," putting her in the company of Broadway greats Gwen Verdon and Mary Martin.

New movies-to-stage fund backs 'Flamingo Kid' musical

Like them or not, Broadway musicals based on movies have become a staple of the New York theater scene. Risk-averse investors see them as a safe bet in an industry marked by escalating costs. But theater critics often look askance at the artistic merit of such ventures.
Funding for screen-to-stage projects is getting a lift from a newly announced fund called Broadway & Vine. The fund is designed to help with the optioning of movie titles for adaptation as musicals, commissioning creative teams for script development and staging the first readings and presentations.

That sentiment gets underlined this month thanks to a new kid on the local arts block. Las Vegas Deaf Theatre is debuting with an evening of Broadway music, dancing, acting and the beautiful language of hands. In collaboration with RagTag Entertainment, the Las Vegas Deaf Theatre will perform the Rodgers and Hammerstein revue "A Grand Night for Singing" as the opening show for Super Summer Theatre at Spring Mountain Ranch in Blue Diamond, Nev. The cast includes deaf, hard of hearing and hearing actors — all local — and the production is uniquely staged for an audience across the same spectrum.

In essence, the Spring for Music festival at Carnegie Hall is a "contest in programming," as Elliott Forrest from WQXR radio put it in a brief onstage interview with Jacques Lacombe, the music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. This venture, now in its second year, has other goals: for example, making Carnegie Hall debuts possible for regional orchestras like the Alabama Symphony. But encouraging ensembles to think creatively about programming is the defining mission, well met by these two orchestras in the third and fourth programs of this year's series.
