Iowa Sweats Out Final to Win NCAA Wrestling Title

Top-ranked Iowa won the team title at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in St. Louis, but the Hawkeyes' victory came by a slim and suspenseful margin after their top star, 149-pounder Brent Metcalf, was upset in the finals. Behind the flailing arms, twisted torsos and puffy ears of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Scottrade Center, Arizona State sophomore Anthony Robles was the most noticeable wrestler in the building. The inspiring Robles, just one of the many stories to be told and conversations to be had at the first of three days of the NCAA event, has never let the missing limb hold him back. In fact, early in his youth, his mother obtained a prosthetic for him. Robles used the artificial limb for less than a year before discarding it. More

MSU’s Gomez, U-M’s Luke Win NCAA Wrestling Titles

Michigan State’s Franklin Gomez and Michigan’s Steve Luke won national titles at the NCAA wrestling championships in St. Louis. Gomez, the No. 1 seed at 133 pounds, scored takedowns in the second and third periods en route to a 5-4 victory over No. 2 seed Reece Humphrey of Ohio State. Humphrey added a reversal in the closing seconds but came up short. More

Cornell's Nickerson Wins NCAA Title; Big Red Finishes Fifth

Cornell junior Troy Nickerson proved it by holding down former champion Paul Donahoe of Edinboro in the final half of the tiebreaker for a 2-1 win in the 125-pound NCAA final at the Scottrade Center.
