Iowa's Metcalf Apologizes for Post-match Shove at NCAA Championships

Saying he had "no malicious intent," Iowa wrestler Brent Metcalf apologized Thursday for an incident that followed his upset loss to foe from North Carolina State at last weekend's NCAA Division I wrestling championships. The top-seeded Metcalf lost 11-6 to third-seeded Darrion Caldwell in the 149-pound final. In the closing seconds, Metcalf chased Caldwell as he circled the mat in celebration. When Caldwell launched a flip just after time expired, Metcalf gave him a brief shove. Because of the incident, Iowa had a point deducted from its team scoring total, though the Hawkeyes still went on to win the team title. More

UNI Wrestling: Panthers Lock up Coach Through 2012

Northern Iowa awarded wrestling coach Brad Penrith with a three-year contract extension Thursday. The contract runs through June 2012, Panthers athletic director Troy Dannen said. Penrith, an NCAA champion at Iowa, will keep the same base salary as 2008-09 — or $70,658 — but performance incentives exist in the new contract. Northern Iowa is 80-63-4 in Penrith’s nine seasons, including 10-6 this season. He has coached wrestlers to all-America honors 13 times and the team has extended its NCAA West Regional winning streak to 24. More
