Jim Giunta talks NCWA with TOM

Jim Giunta is going into his 13th year of heading the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) with the same enthusiasm as he had when he began the fledgling college club wrestling organization in 1997. What started as a small organization with a few teams is now a very well run machine with a large membership base. The Open Mat was able to speak with Jim recently and get his thoughts on the organization’ past, present and future, and also his opinion on the state of Texas high school wrestling.

Former Olympic Wrestling Champ Helping out SCSU

Wrestling has taken John Peterson in many different directions. Part of that has to do with his own storied wrestling career. The other has to do with the Athletes in Action, the organization he has worked with for 35 years. Peterson, a native of Cumberland, Wis., who still lives there, works with the St. Cloud State, Augsburg and University of Minnesota wrestling teams as a volunteer assistant coach through Athletes in Action.This is his second year helping out St. Cloud State head coach Steve Costanzo and the Huskies. All Roads Lead to Dayton

Getting to Know: Cory Cooperman

New Rutgers wrestling coach Cory Cooperman had every reason to stay at Cornell. He aided the Big Red to a No. 5 finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships. He helped the program produce three Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association and Ivy League team titles, along with 12 All-Americans and two National Champions. Even with his success at Cornell, Cooperman couldn’t ignore his attraction to Rutgers. Cooperman says RU coaches Scott Goodale and John Leonardis are “like brothers.” He believes the foundation Goodale has established puts the Scarlet Knights in the right direction.
