After Long Wait, Iowa Beats OSU
from The Gazette
Tom Brands' 50th dual win as the University of Iowa wrestling coach may not have been spectacular, but it had to be special. The top-ranked Hawkeyes snapped a nine-dual losing streak to Oklahoma State on Sunday, winning six of the 10 matches to beat the 13th-ranked Cowboys, 20-13, at Gallagher-Iba Arena. It was Brands' first dual win over Oklahoma State as Hawkeye coach and Iowa's first win in Stillwater since 1996. More

Southern Illinois Edwardsville Cougars go 1-3
from NCWA
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling team fell in three straight duels. SIUE fell to Indianapolis 38-9 in the first duel. Then the Cougars were defeated by Northern Illinois 48-9 and finished with a loss to Missouri Baptist 34-18. More

Nickerson's Quick Pin Sets Cornell Record
from The Ithaca Journal
It didn't take long for Troy Nickerson or the No. 2 Cornell wrestling team to seize control of its matches. Nickerson set a school record for the fastest pin, taking down Eastern Michigan's Jordan McGuire in 13 seconds to help send the Big Red on its way to a 28-10 victory over the Eagles at the Friedman Wrestling Center. Buckeyes Look for Progress
from The News Press via NCWA
A runner-up finish at the NCAA Tournament last season raised expectations for the Ohio State wrestling team. From the outside, it appears it is living up to them. The sixth-ranked Buckeyes are 4-0 in dual matches. But wrestlers and coaches feel they have been inconsistent and somewhat burdened by the pressure of reaching the new standard. Case in point: Ohio State trailed Kent State 15-13 on Sunday before wins from Lance Palmer (149 pounds) and Jason Johnstone (157) put the Buckeyes on top. That followed a close win over Edinboro and an 11th place finish at the Las Vegas Invitational in December. More

Wrestler Askren Headed to Ultimate Fighting
from Belleville News Democrat
He's already put the chin in China. Now, Ben Askren is going to stick his neck out in a new venture. The decorated wrestler is about to embark on a career as a mixed martial arts fighter. He has signed with American Top Team, which has a franchise in Columbia, and will compete at 170 pounds. Askren gained national recognition while wrestling for the University of Missouri and was as recognizable for his appearance and personality as his success on the mat. More

UNC Wrestling: Bears Show Good Form
from Greeley Tribune
The lineup for the University of Northern Colorado wrestling team is starting to round into the form coach Jack Maughan had hoped it would, and it is starting to pay dividends for the Bears. In what might have been the Bears’ best dual meet performance of the season, UNC won all but two matches — relying on some last-second heroics — as the Bears downed Stanford 25-7 at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. Iowa Wrestling: Hawkeyes Cradle More Hardware
from Des Moines Register
Heavyweight Dan Erekson pinned Cornell's Taylor Moore and secured Iowa's second Division I championship in the National Duals wrestling tournament Sunday at the UNI-Dome. A four-match run of success helped the No. 1 seed Hawkeyes to a 23-13 victory over the No. 3 seed Big Red before an announced crowd of 8,236. The win extended Iowa's winning streak to 28 duals and gave the Hawkeyes back-to-back National Duals titles for the first time since 1995 and 1996. More

A Different Shade of Grey for Big Red
from The Ithaca Journal
Six weeks seems like a short time to re-invent yourself on a national stage. But Cornell sophomore Mike Grey has done it following a rocky start to his second season. Wrestling at 141 pounds early in the year, Grey couldn't get in sync. After being pinned at the Body Bar Invitational in late November by Sacred Heart's Chris Davis, Grey "fell off the radar a bit," Big Red coach Rob Koll said. Not at his best, Grey dropped back down to 133, where he was an All-American as a freshman. He returned to the national rankings at that weight on Jan. 6, but the Cliff Keen National Duals tournament can be considered his official return to the radar. More
