NCAA Adopts New Qualifying System

 Last year, the Penn State wrestling team sent seven individuals to the national tournament, but it's uncertain if it will send that many this season.
Over the offseason, the NCAA decided to change the qualification procedure for the national tournament because it was the only collegiate sport that used historical data to determine who competed, Ohio State coach Tom Ryan said. He said the committee put the plan in place "in the spirit for doing the best for the student-athletes."
Now, wrestlers can qualify for nationals based on the toughness of their schedule throughout the season and on the ranking system.

Governors Late Season Kicks Off

Northern State Defeats Wounded Chadron

The Northern State wrestling team edged a short-handed Chadron State 21-20 at Wachs Arena. The teams finished with five wins each. Two of Northern's wins were by forfeit due to an automobile accident that hospitalized two of the Eagles' wrestlers. More

Sophomores Spark Boise State Wrestling's Victory

Apparently, there is no such thing as the sophomore jinx when it comes to the Boise State wrestling program. Harvard's Corey Jantzen is Healthy Again, and Now Ranked No. 1 in the Country

Time was ticking down and Corey Jantzen was in total control. The Harvard sophomore was about to earn a major decision victory in the 141-pound finals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. But then something went wrong. Horribly wrong. With the two wrestlers facing each other, Pittsburgh’s Tyler Nauman put Jantzen in a front headlock, executed a cement mixer and launched him to his back. Jantzen was in serious trouble. Nauman had him locked up tight and close to being pinned. But after nearly 15 seconds, Jantzen performed his biggest move of the tournament. He somehow fought off his back.
Jantzen went on to earn a 10-5 win.

Chuck Yagla, a former two-time NCAA champion for Iowa, will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum's Class of 2009 in the category of Lifetime Achievement for Officials. Yagla has been an official for 24 years. From 1996-2007, he worked the NCAA tournament and was selected as a championship finals official five times. He has also officiated six NCAA Division II Championships along with Big Ten (1995-07) and Pac-10 (1997-07) conference tournaments. More
